The First Epistle of Paul the Apostle
A verse by verse Commentary
This is the first epistle or letter from the apostle Paul to Timothy. This epistle belongs to the pastoral epistles that the apostle Paul wrote to Timotheus and Titus. This is the first personal epistle or letter to Timothy or the first pastoral epistle! The epistle was probably written 67 after Christ.
The person Timothy or Timotheus
Who was Timotheus or Timothy? He was the son of a Greek father and a believing Jewish mother and grandmother. In Acts 16 we read for the first time about Timotheus:Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek: Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek. The name of the father of Timothy is not named and we don't know that he was a believer in Christ. Only what we know from the scriptures is that he was a Greek. The mother and grandmother of Timothy were believers in Christ and brought him up from youth on with the scriptures of God's Word. 2 Timothy 1 verse 5 confirms this: When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. When the apostle Paul took Timothy on his mission trips Timothy was a young man. When the apostle Paul wrote the epistles to Timothy, Timothy was much older and was already the leader, pastor or overseer of the church at Ephesus.
The purpose of the Pastoral Letters
The purpose of this epistle, the second epistle to Timothy and the epistle to Titus is to give instructions in general for pastors and overseers/bishops in a organization as a local church. Timothy as Titus were leaders/pastors of respectivily Ephesus and the island Crete. These instructions are given under the Dispensation of the Grace of God Ephesians 3:1-3 whereunder we still live. We can learn a lot in these epistles about leadership and how to become a leader of a local churh and what must a leader comply with: what kind of man he must be: practical: his attitude in daily life. Not only the pastor or overseer is spoken in these letters also about the deacons or helpers in the local churches. What is also important is this: how do you deal with people who oppose the truth, the Gospel of the Grace of God, the weak persons in the congregation, false doctrines

Chapter I verse 1
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;
Verse 1: We read here Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ. In Galatians chapter 1 verse 1 we read the following verse: Paul, an apostle, not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, Who raised Him for the dead" The apostle Paul was called to be an apostle by Jesus Christ from heaven when he was on his way to Damascus. On that moment he was called Saul, Saul of Tarsus. We read in Act 9 verses 1-7 the following: And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. On his way as the leader of the rebellion against Christ and his followers, the church at Jerusalem, Saul of Tarsus was called by the risen Lord Jesus Christ. He Saul was God's bitterest enemy, a murderer. This man became the apostle of the Gentiles Romans 11 verse 13. From a murderer, the bitterest enemy on earth Paul became a servant, an apostle of Jesus Christ. In Acts 9 verse 15 we read: But the Lord said unto him (Ananias), Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel. The apostle Paul was the first man who was saved by Grace alone, by Faith alone and in Christ alone Ephesians 2:8-9. Paul was not one of the 12 apostles as a lot of people think and proclaim. No he was the one apostle to the Gentiles. To proof this we read in Galatians 1 verse 11-20 the following verses:But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother. Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not. The first time Paul saw the Lord Jesus Christ in all His glory, he saw Him in heaven. Paul never saw the Lord Jesus Christ on earth so he couldn't be one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ according the Lord's ministry on earth. Read Acts 1 verses 20-26! There we read that they, the apostles, chose Matthias to take the place in for Judas Iscariot who was the betrayer of the Lord and had hanged himself. Matthias became the 12 th Jewish apostle. Why was Paul called by our Lord? Answer because of the fall of Israel Romans 11: 11 and 25. For I would not brethren, taht ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles become in. Israel is for a time set aside by God my dear brother and sister! God's plan with Israel, the Kingdom program, the prophecy has God for a time stopped because of Israel's refuse of Him in totality. In I Samuel 8 verse 7 we read: And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them" And in Acts 3 vese 14 and 15 Israel rejected the Son: The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. And in Acts 7 verse 51 and 52: Israel rejected the Holy Spirit: Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: God after that stopped His plan with Israel, the earthly plan and began a new plan, the Mystery which was kept secret with Him before the world was formed! For God hath concluded them all in unbelief (all people), that He might have mercy upon all Romans 11:32. This is what happened after Israel rejected the Holy Spirit in Acts 7 by stoning Stephen. So that's why God called Saul of Tarsus to be the apostle of the Gentiles (world) with a new Gospel, the Gospel of the Grace of God Acts 20:24, Romans 16:25-26. To reveal the Mystery, make known the Mystery and Paul was the first one who proclaimed this to this lost world. It was and is by the commandment of God our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ Which is our Hope. In Him Christ there is Hope. He is the only Hope for this world! In Colossians 1:25-27 we read: Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory"
I Timothey I verse 2
Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
Verse 2: The apostle Paul mention here Timothy his own son in the faith. The common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. This let us as readers see that Paul had a close relationship with Timothy as a father with a son. Paul regarded Timothy as his own son in the faith. I think Paul had a better relation to Timothy then Timothy had with his natural father who was a Greek man. His own natural father we don't know if he was a believer in Christ. It is not mentioned. His mother Eunice and grandmother Lois were believers in Christ. In 2 Timothy 1 verses 3 and 4 we read the following verses: I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; These verses are again a proof that how much close this relation was between the apostle Paul and Timothy, his own son in the faith. Paul loved Timothy so much with the love of God, the agape. Timothy was not only a believer in Christ, he was a faithful believer and grown up in deeper knowledge and in walk in Christ. Naturally Timothy was also weak just as Paul and this let you see that we too are weak because we all are members of the Body of Christ. It will not say that the time wherein we now live 2000 years later is better. No not at all. We still live in a sin world and we too are weak in our bodies and we are saved sinners too and do also sin every day just like Paul and Timothy did. Paul did not only circumcise Timothy, he laid up his hands on him. We can read this in 2 Timothy 1 verse 6: Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
After this we see here the words Grace mercy and peace. These things come from God Himself and not of people. Men from nature do not know what Grace, mercy and peace is. Why not? This is because of the fall of man Romans 5 verse 12. What men know and do is to make war, ruthless, merciless. This all through the fall of man. Men have the sin nature. We see it in this world. On this moment we are heading on a new European war and this all because of sin in this world. The world (unbelieving people) don't know God and don't know what is love, peace and mercy. We brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ are saved by His Grace, by His Faith and through Christ alone. We couldn't save ourselves. The only One Who saved us is God through Christ Jesus!! Ephesians 2:8-9. Only God has Love because He is Love, mercy and peace. Men not. For us we as Timothy members of the Body of Christ we are forgiven by His blood, we have the Love, mercy and peace from God. Thank our heavenly Father Who gave us this through His Son Jesus Christ!! He lives and is resurrected from the grave and is ascended into heaven and sits on the right hand of the Father. We have now to do with the risen Lord Jesus Christ and we are in Him. How wonderful and we know Him now according His heavenly plan and not the earthly plan like Israel. Read 2 Corinthians 5 verses 16-17.
I Timothy I verse 3
As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia,
that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
Verse 3: In this verse we read what Paul wrote to Timothy and Paul admonish Timothy here to stay in Ephesus. Probably the situation in the local church (es) was deteriorated. The apostle Paul had ordained Timothy to be the leader/pastor of Ephesus and after this Paul journeyed to Macedonia. This was for a purpose: first that Timothy had the authority over the church in Ephesus and now Paul writes him what he told Timothy: that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine. Some oppose the sound doctrine, the Gospel of the Grace of God and the task of Timothy was to charge the people that they teach no other do doctrine. After 2000 years mow it is that the Gospel of the Grace of God still is rejected and replaced by another Gospel: a mixed Gospel of Social, Law of Moses, 4 Gospels with Grace of God. This is my experience as teacher of the Gospel of the Grace of God. Probably in Ephesus there was a lot of opposition as today. The Gospel of the Grace of God is still resisted and rejected because through this the devil is defeated. A lot of people were fallen from the truth, the Gospel of the Grace of God in Ephesus and believed the lie. Surely with the uproar you see it in Acts 19. Timotheus was the leader of the local church and for him was the task to teach the people the sound doctrine and be awake and charge some that they teach no other doctrine Romans 16:25-26. A difficult task that Timothy had.
I Timothy I verse 4
Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister
questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do
Verse 4: Neither give heed to fables. What are fables? Fabrications, made of men that it looks like it is true. In fairy tails animals are speaking in those. A lot of children are grown up with such fables. In the first place it was for Timothy neither to give heed to fables and to protect the others of the congregation for this. Endless genaelogies which minister questions. What is this? Family trees. To be busy with this it takes you away from God's word and can lead to questions and it will not build us up. It is better to be build up from God's Word of Grace Acts 20:32. This gives more peace and joy then endless genealogies or fables. For this Timothy had to protect people from this and warn them against it. In that time you had a lot of Jewish fables.
I Timothy I verse 5
Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
Verse 5: From verse 3 till this verse we have commandments of the apostle Paul for Timothy and not only for him, also for us who are living now 2000 years later and are members of the Body of Christ too. Now we come here in this verse to the end of the commandment which the apostle Paul in the first place gave to Timothy. The apostle says charity our of a pure heart. This is love! Which love is here spoken? This is the Love of God which was in Him Christ and what we already studied in the epistle to the Philippians in Chapter 2 veses 5-9 (read this for yourselves) This is the agape. The love that is spoken in I Corinthians 13. In verse 4 of that chapter 13 we read: Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up" This love of God we have to make it our own, that it may be part of us dear brothers and sisters. Out of a pure heart, a good conscience and faith unfeigned. If we are lead by God's Spirit then will begin to work brother and sister in our lives and soon people will recognize that Galatians 5 vese 22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith. We have God's Spirit inside brother and sister so let us be led by God's Spirit so that this commandment will work. Unfeigned is sincere, genuine
I Timothy I verse 6
From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
Verse 6 Some people from the local church there at Ephesus were depart from this love, this charity of God, depart from the faith and have turned aside unto vain jangling. What is vain jangling? Foolish, empty talk. This happend there in Ephesus and it happens everyday now 2000 years later. To give to much attention to this it brings you also in this sort kind of foolish things. Some of the believers did this and departed from the faith, from the love of God, from God's Word. It is very easy my dear brothers and sisters so let us be awake! In Acts 20 verses 29-30 we read: For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. The apostle Paul hath warned about this and now Timothy had the task to protect people and warn people from this foolish talk. Nowadays it is the same in this world wherein we live and we have to be awake not to join such things as a lot of people do in this world because they don't know why this is not good. But it is not for our spiritual grow my dear brothers and sisters so be not involved in such things. After the apostle Paul passed away into the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ the Gospel of the Grace of God Romans 16:25-26 was in general by men forgotten, not preached anymore. This lasted until the end of the 19 th Century that more and more the Gospel of Grace was rediscovered and later in the 20th Century with pastor O hair and pastor Stam again fully proclaimed in this world. Still it is very difficult in this world to proclaim it because there is a lot of resistance of the devil. A lot of people and surely brothers and sisters believe the devil's lies. He is a master to withdraw the truth into the lie. Foolish talks is one of his trucks and human thoughts, media and there are more things he does to hold people away from God's Word and specially God's Word of Grace Acts 20:32. Brothers and sisters: if we know the truth, the Gospel of our salvation, let us stand for it like Timothy did despite all the difficulties and sufferings he had in Ephesus. In II Timothy 4 verse 5 the apostle says to him and to us :But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. We all as members of the Body of Christ can do the work of an evangelist, don't forget this!
I Timothy I verse 7
Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
I Timotheus 1:13
Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious:
but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
Verse 13: Before Paul's conversion nearby Damascus Acts 9, 22 and 26 he was a blasphemer, a persecutor and injurious. He was a persecutor of the church at Jerusalem which originated from the day of Pentecost see Acts 2. What is blashemer? Answer: a person who speaks disrespectfully and Paul blashemed the Lord Jesus Christ. Injurious what does that mean? Damaging and in this case the church at Jerusalem. He Paul and then Saul of Tarsen destroyed the church! He came from Tarsen, was a Jewish man and raised on the foot of Gamaliel. He Paul was a Pharisee and very powerful in the Scriptures of the Law. He didn't know the Lord and didn't know that he was fighting against the Lord. In Acts 22 verse 3 and 4 we read the following verses: I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day. And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women. Before his conversion the apostle Paul/Saul was on dead track as anyone of us before we accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior! The way to Damascus Paul did it ignorantly and in unbelief. He didn't know what he was doing. But he obtained mercy, mercy from God. God was and is so merciful for his biggest enemy on earth. That He saved Paul by Grace alone, by Faith alone and in Christ alone. He Paul was the first man who was saved like this and we with him. Thank God for His mercy on us and that we are saved by Grace alone by Faith alone and in Christ alone just like Paul.
I Timotheus I verse 14
And the Grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
Verse 14: The Grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant! What does that mean? Answer it is to be present in great quantity, more than adequate. We brothers and sisters are saved by Grace alone through faith and that not from ourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest nay man should boast Ephesians 2:8-9. This Grace, Gods Grace is very great and more than adequate! The apostle Paul boasted in this. He, God paid in Christ the prize for us on Calvary, in our place He died there on Calvary. It was for us! He never didn't die His own death but ours. We couldn't bear our guilt. We deserved the punishment but He took the punishment on Himself there on Calvary because He was and is without sin II Corinthians 5 vese 21 tells us: For He hath made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. And in Romans 5 verse 6-8 we read: For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. We were the enemies of God and God in His love died for us enemies on Calvary and paid the prize for us: His life on that cross. We have no forgiveness through His blood, the forgiveness from all our sins. Romans 4 verse 25: Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. We are now new men in Him, in Christ. No longer anymore in Adam, that was our former state. We as the apostle Paul could only thank the Lord what He did for us. Oh how wonderful is this exceeding Grace of God and it is not from ourselves so that we cannot boast in ourselves. Make this your own my dear brother and sister that it may be a part of your daily life. Let us not boast in ourselves because from ourselves we are nothing. Who boast boast in our Lord Jesus Chrits. Honor to Him!
I Timothy I verse 15
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
Verse 15: Brothers and sisters: a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation!!! Jesus Chris came into the world for one purpose: to save sinners. Paul was the first who was saved by Grace alone, by faith alone and in Christ alone. The first in the Body of Christ Paul is and was. Brothers and sisters: this is one of the most beautiful verse of the Bible, God's Word and God's Word we see is faithful and worthy of all acceptation because it it the truth: Christ came into the world to save sinners like you and me and everyone in this world can believe this and accept Him as Savior!! No doubt about that! He died for you and me on Calvary's cross, was buried and is risen from the grave and is exalted in heaven far above all principalities and powers Ephesians 1:21-23! I Corinthians 15:3-4. Believe that He died also for your sins dear reader and took all your guilt upon Himself on that cross! If you believe this you are saved forever and have everlasting life Acts 16:31!!! Believe it now! Sooner will be to late my dear reader! You can do on the place you are now, it does not matter where you are now on this moment but do it!!!
I Timothy 1 verse 16
Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
Verse 16: The purpose of God to send His Only begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to be this earth was to save sinners. He had done this on Calvary to die for mankind. In I Peter 3 verse 18 we read: For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit" He without sin, Just for the unjust, for sinners died on that cross!! That is God's mercy for this world. He alone is merciful. Mercy comes from God, not from men! Romans 11 verse 32 we read: For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that He might have mercy upon all" The apostle Paul was the first man God obtained mercy upon and that in him Paul first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern them which should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting" We have seen what kind of person Paul was before he was saved by Grace alone, by faith alone and in Christ alone! He was before a balshemer, a persecutor, injurious but he obtained mercy from God becasue he did it ignorantly in unbelief. I Timothy 1 verse 13. God had mercy for Paul, He had longsuffering for Paul. God have mercy for this world it is now heading for a world war 3. But many people can be saved, yes now on this moment. Now is the day of salvation II Corinthians 6 verse 2! Yes you my dear reader if you are not saved yet, accept you are a sinner and need a Savior! The Savior is Jesus Christ, He died for you on that cross too, in your place He died for you because you cannot bear this, your guilt, you cannot pay for your sins. He has paid for the whole world inclusive you, was buried and is risen and will give you life! Everlasting life! Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved Acts 16:31! I Corinthians 15:3-4, II Corinthians 5:19-21!
We know it is now very dangerous in this world with great threats specially here in Europe. Let us trust in God my dear brothers and sisters and let us read Philippians 4 verse 6 and 7: Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your reguests be made known unt God. And the peace of God , which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. So my dear brothers and sisters we have not to be afraid. Romans 8 verse 38 and 39 let us see this: For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I Timothy I verse 17
Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Verse 17: How wonderful this verse is my dear brothers and sisters: all honour and glory goes to God for ever and ever. He is the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God! In I Corinthians 1 verse 18 -20 we read the following remarkable verses: For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? And in verse 25 we read: Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. What is the foolishness of God which is wiser than men and what is the weakness of God which is stronger than men? Answer we find in verse 21-23: For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Dear brothers and sisters: the world who is now in war know in general not God but God is alive. We cannot see Him but He is our strength and through His Word the Bible. God is the only wise God! Let us rejoice in Him and for His salvation in Christ for us!!! Another verses we read in In I Timothy 6: 14-16: That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
I Timothy I verse 18
This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which
went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
Verse 18: This charge I commit unto thee. A command for Timothy. Timothy was the spiritual son of Paul. Son in the common faith of Jesus Christ. Timoty was a young man and accompanied Paulus on his travels through province little Asia and Europe (Greece). Which command had Timothy had to do? Answer: according to the prophecies which went before on him. What was this. In I Timothy 6 verse 12 we read: Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. The answer is to be a pastor, a leader and to proclaim the Gospel of the Grace of God and fight the good fight as the apostle Paul did. War a good warfare according Ephesians 6 verses 11-17! I Timothy 4 verse 14: Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. And rightly dividing the Word of truth 2 Timothy 2:15. He had not to give up in the war and hold on the faith. We know that Timothy was a weak man. He had a lot of times problems with his stomach and bowels. Timothy knew it very well but the apostle Paul admonish him here. Maybe because of the difficult situation in Ephesus it was not easy for Timothy to continue always in the war with the good warfare. We know that the war is not against flesh and blood but against satan and his hosts and powers Ephesians 6 verse 12. We just as Timothy have not give up and continue to stand for the Gospel of the Grace of God my brothers and sisters and fight the good fight! We have not to lose the mood. We are more than conquerors in Christ Romans 8 verse 37.
I Timothy 1 verse 19
Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
Verse 19: Holding the faith. The faith in Jesus Christ. His faith has saved us and that we can trust everyday. That we continue to believe in the Gospel of the Grace of God and stand for it. As Timothy and a good conscience. Romans 12 verse 1 tells us this: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Reasonable service. It is your reason, your brain. There it starts! Some of the people in Ephesus had put away concerning faith an have made shipwreck. Put away the faith in Christ and the Gospel of the Grace of God then you made shipwreck. There were people who didn't want the stand for it and it is the same today my dear brothers and sisters. Now a question: do you want to hold the faith and a good conscience? Let us brothers and sisters despite setbacks, persecutions hold fast the faith and hold fast God's Grace Gospel and here we have the words the apostle Paul told Timothy: But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. 2 Timothy 4 verse 5
I Timothy 1 verse 20
Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
Verse 20: Some have put away the faith. We know also people who studied with us (my wife and me) the Gospel of the Grace of God and ritghtly dividing the Word of truth but stopped to believe in the Gospel of the Grace of God. Here we see here two names Hymenaeus and Alexander. They had put away the faith and they became blasphemers. They spoke much evil like cursing etc. Hymenaeus was probably a man from Ephesus. Probably he was also one of the uproar of Ephesus. Read Acts 91 verses 32-40. And Alexander the coppersmith. In 2 Timothy 2 verse 16-17 we read:But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; Their words are very fast lie the cancer. Cancer is a stealthy and killer. In 2 Timothy 4 verse 14 we read: Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works. The Lord will judge this man! The apostle Paul given them over unto satan that they may leran not to blaspheme. In I Corinthians 5 verse 5 we read a similar verse: To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Here it is about fornication and about the man who has sexual intercourse with the wife of his father and that persons who do this remain proud. This was in the local church in Corinth. The measure was and is for the local church to deliver such a man over unto satan for the destruction of the flesh and here in this verse because of blasheming to deliver over unto satan. Today we have a lot of these opponents like Hymenaeus, Alexander and Philetus. Brothers and sisters let us stand for the truth and we have not to discuss with such people who blasheme like the people in Paul's day. We don't give space to such persons. Not with angriety but with gentleness and that's a an art to do this. Let us be led by God's Spirit through His Word of Grace and to know is that God does more than we pray or think after the power which works in us!
I Timothy 2 verse 1
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
Verse 1: We see here a very important exhortation of the apostle Paul to Timothy how he had to instruct the other believers to do. Prayers, intercessions and give thanks for all men. Sometimes this is very difficult. What we can pray is that the all the unbelievers in this world may come to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior for their lives before it is to late. For the believers , the Body of Christ to pray for them too and for the ones who stand for the truth that they hold to stand for the truth and the ones who don't know it that they may know it. If we know persons with names this it the best because then you can focusing in your prayer for that person. This all before God our Father Who know everyone in this world. Everything for Him is open. In Hebrews 4 verse 13 we read: Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do.
I Timothy 2 verse 2
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
Verse 2: For kings and for all those people that are in authority. Also our King and Queen in our country and all the members of the Royal family, the people of the government here in the Netherlands but also in other countries. We can pray for them because of the fact that they are also men and need the Savior Jesus Christ in their lives too just like us. Also dictators in this world who reign with a lot of repression and we see the examples everyday on TV or internet. Yes and why we should pray also for enemies and such corrupt persons? Because of this my dear brother and sister: that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. Also dictators can accept the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and their lives will be changed and so that people under him can from that moment on live in peace and feel not anymore the repression. I personally thank God that we have always here in the Netherlands the freedom to believe and to read the Bible freely and proclaim the Gospel of the Grace of God. A lot of countries people are not allowed to do that and if they do this the authorities put them in concentrationcamps or killed them. Here in the Netherlands we live in freedom and this is very special and we thank God for this everyday!
I Timothy 2 verse 3
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
Verse 3: To pray for all the above people: people like kings, ceasars, persons in authority because that is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour because this is the will of God. No matter how hard we find it to do this it is still God's will that we do it. because then we can live a peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. To pray also for dictators, dangerous men who make a lot of crimes in their lives. We know from the apostle Paul that he was before his conversion also a murderer and a criminal and God obtained mercy on him because he did it ignorantly. For such dictators they also dont know what they do. So we have to pray that they will accept the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior so that they may be saved forever and that their lives and that of millions of people may change who live under such persons.
I Timothy 2 verse 4
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
Verse 4: So this is the reason why the apostle Paul says supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men. Because of the above fact that Gods will is that all men to be saved!!! This is His will. He came to this world through Jesus Christ to save sinners like you and me. He gave His life for mankind on that cross on Calvary, yes for you and me. He don't want that people are going to eternal death but to eternal life, you also my dear reader!! He is God and He is Love and He loves people.like you and me . Christ was buried and is resurrected and is alive! Now He sits on the right hand of the Father far above all principality, powers, might and dominion, above all names! And He wants to save you!! The eternal salvation is in Jesus Christ and that's the most important thing! Romans 6 verse 23 tells us the following: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved Acts 16:31! This is the first will of God and second we read here: and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. Come to the knowledge of the Mystery which is that truth! Read Colossians 1:5-6. In Ephesians 3 verse 8 and 9 we read: Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ. Now the question to you my brother and sister: do you want to grow in the spiritual life? Do you want to know the truth or do you want to stay a baby in the faith like the Corinthian believers?
What is the reason why most believers in Christ want not to know the knowledge of the truth?
1 Most people are satisfied when they are saved forever
2 Most people don't know the fact of growing in the faith
3 A lot of people are lazy
4 A lot of people are not aware that they don't grow, they think they are growing
5 A lot of modern translations of the Bible makes it more difficult to come to believe and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
6 The devil, the great enemy of God tries to hold people from the truth and from Gods Word and he brings the lie. He let people tossed and fro and in much uncertainty.
Now the question to you my brother and sister: what hinders you not wish to know the truth? Again read Colossians 1:5-6. We have to give the Lord later in heaven a account what we have done with the truth, His Word of Grace. Did we accept it and made it known or did we ignored it all our lives? Think about this. This is what will happen! So a call on you all: learn and study this Gospel of Grace and stand and make it known to this world for it Romans 16:25-26. and you will not be ashamed before the Bema where you have to give a account!
I Timothy 2 verse 5
For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus
Verse 5: There is one God. In Deuteronomy 6 verse 4 we read : Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord" In Ephesians 4 verse 6 we read:One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. Dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ: there is one God. We read in I Corinthians 8 verse 6: But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. Outside God there is no god. The Romans hath their gods, the Greek people had their gods like Artemis, the goddess of Ephesus, of love. But there is really one God, beside Him there is no god. And we have one Mediator between God and men. What is a Mediator? It comes from the word Mesitis which means intercessor what means a middleman. Strange that the Roman Catholic church always in all those ages proclaimed that Maria the mother (in the flesh) of our Lord Jesus Christ is the Mediator. She was just like you and me a sinner. How can she be a mediator between men and God? Christ is the only One because He without sin died for all mankind, sinners, on that cross on Calvary and was buried and resurrected the third day! Read I Corinthians 15: 3-4. Romans 4:24. He is only the Mediator between God and men! In Galatians 3 verse 19 and 20 we read: Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
I Timothy 2 verse 6
Who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Verse 6: Good news my dear brothers and sisters and also readers who read this and aren't believers. God gave Himself a ransom for all! For all mankind. Yes for you and me He gave Himself a ransom! He gave His life for you and me! Where? On the cross on Calvary! Through our Lord Jesus Christ God gave Himself a ransom, yes a ransom for the whole world! Romans 5 verse 6- 8:For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. And Romans 11 verses 32 and 33 we see the reason why: For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! Romans 4 verse 25: Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. This is testified in due time. In due time means“eventually” or “at the right time.” Dear reader maybe you don't know the Lord Jesus Christ in your life. Recognize you are a sinner and you cant pay for your sins. He without sin died for you on the cross on Calvary I Corinthians 15:3-4. Accept the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior now at this moment and you will be saved forever. Sooner it will be to late because now is the day of salvation 2 Corinthians 6 verse 1-3!
I Timothy 2 verse 7
Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;)
a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
Verse 7: Through God the apostle Paul was ordained a preacher and an apostle. For what he was ordained? To preach the glory of the cross and the Gospel of the Grace of God Acts 20:24. In Acts 9:15 we read again:But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel" Originally we as members of the Body of Christ were Gentiles and the apostle Paul is our apostle. We have to follow him as he followed Christ I Corinthians 4 verse 16 and I Corinthians 11:1. Apostle comes from the Greek word apostolos which means one send with a special message. God ordained Paul on the way to Damascus to be a preacher and an apostle. He was chosen by the risen Lord Jesus Christ. The 12 apostles were chosen by our Lord when He was on earth for Israel, but Paul was chosen by the risen Lord Jesus Christ from heaven. Read for yourselves Acts 26 verse 16 and 17. 2 Timothy 1 verse 11 tells us: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. Teacher, instructor comes from the Greek word didaskalos. In Galatians 1 verse 11 and 12 we read it very clear these words:But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. God was his Witness. God knew that Paul never lied because he preached the truth, the Mystery and that is the truth!
I Timothy 2 verse 8
I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
Verse 8: Dear brothers and sisters: From this verse on we see that Paul gave instructions to Timothy how it should go in the local churches. Timothy was the leader of the church at Ephesus but these instructions are not only for Timothy also for the whole Body of Christ and where local churches. Men pray every where: in local churches or in houses where believers are together. The man in the family has to pray before the meals. He is responsible in this. What does it mean lifting up holy hands. Hand must be holy and not full of wrath and contention so quarrel! Anger, distrust and suspicion has no place in the prayer to God! In Isaiah 1 verse 15 we read a example of this: And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. This said God to Israel, His folk! There was blood on their hands! Lifting up holy hands will not say that we lift up our arms and hands litterally uphigh. They have to be holy without wrath or blood or anger.
I Timothy 2 verse 9
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness
and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
Verse 9: The apostle Paul gave here the instructions for women in the local churches. Here trough Timothy to the Ephesian saints in the local church. What does is it mean to adorn yourself in modest apparel. It comes from the Greek word kosmios which mean ordered decoration. Not with al lot of this but sober. It will not say that women must not give attendence by the appearance but they have not to exaggerate. If all the attendence is on their faces with a lot of make up and hair that is not what God wants. I Peter 3 verse 3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of godl or of putting on of apparel. This is what God's truth is here. To give less attendence on such things. This is what the world wants. They only look to the outside but God sees to the insight of men and women.
I Timothy 2 verse 10
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
Verse 10: The attention of women in the local churches, in the Body of Christ which is the Church shouldn't be alone for the appearance but it is more godliness. What is Godliness? Professing godlisness. This is first to fear God, busy with Gods Word of Grace, to study that and to walk in the Work of the Lord, ordained by God before. To stand for the truth Colossians 1:5-6. Also in walk: to be friendly, patience for other people, also for people who oppose the truth! And that they give the first place/authority to men in the local church!
I Timothy 2 verse 11
Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
Verse 11: Brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ. This is how God sees her position and in the practice of everyday. The woman learn in silence with all subjection. She cannot teach the man in the marriage with God's Word. If her husband is not a believer she can tell him the Good News, the Gospel of Salvation so that he may also come to believe/accept Christ as Savior in his life. She can also study Theology but be no pastor or Bibleteacher over men. She can learn other women, sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ. She can teach also children in the local church. She can learn in silence the Word of God, the Bible, the Gospel of the Grace of God Acts 20:24. With all subjection. This will not say that she has nothing to say. She is like a help for the local church, to give advice, suggestions, help in the Sundayschool, to translate material etc. This we did in the past: my wife was a secretary and Sundayschool teacher for the children. Titus 2 verses 3 and 4 tells us: The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. The aged women in a local church are the widows or older women who can teach the younger women and be a example for them to build them up in the Gospel of the Grace of God and in the spiritual life.
I Timothy 2 verse 12
But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
Verse 12: This verse follows the former verse. In I Corinthians 14 verse 34 and 35 we read:Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. This is a command, a rule of God. Women has not to teach in Biblestudies/services, when men are present! Probably there were women also in that time who teached the Word of God also to men and this we see nowadays a lot back that women study Theology to be a referend or teacher/pastor. This let us see how far the Christian world is away from the originally Word of God. A lot of them don't know and do some things they are ignorant about it. It let you also see that men in general are weak and let women rule over them. |I see it also in my work in the hospital that more women are rulers than men. Why can't women not learn men? Why cant women not be a overseer/bishop, be a elder in the local church. You see a lot of women doing this in churches. To answer this we read the next verse to understand this.
I Timothy 2 verse 13
For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
Verse 13: Yes the woman Eve was taken out of man. We read in Genesis 2 verse 18 the following verse: And theLordGod said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. In Verses 21-25 we read: And theLordGod caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which theLordGod had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. I Corinthians 11 verse 8,9 For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
And so is the order to God's creation! God created this on this manner! Man and wife God created human being. He didn't create man and man, Adam and Steve. No it was and is Adam and Eve. Man has the end responsibility not only in the family, also in the local church.
I Timothy 2 verse 14
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
Verse 14: Adam was not first deceived by satan but Eve, the woman and she deceived Adam . He was responsible. He knew very well what he did because the fruit was forbidden. She was in offence. Sin however came through Adam in this world Romans 5 verse 12 because he at from the forbidden fruit and man was responsible and so sin came into human being. Satan was very clever to go to the weaker part of the couple namely the woman. Adam sinned with his eyes open for the love of his wife. These are very serious words my brother and sister in our Lord Jesus Christ: take this very serious and look not upon other people what their meaning is or what they to claim or say. Take God at His Word and do God's will also in this!
I Timothy 2 verse 15
Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
Verse 15: The woman can be pregnant and shall be saved in childbearing. Saved here is preserved. The place of the woman is more at home and she shall be saved from the pitfalls who a lot of women lives have demolished if she continued in faith, charity and holiness with sobriety. |It is here place with her husband at home and with the children if they have both children. This is the ideal life but there are circumstances where this is not possible. It will not say is normal circumstances that a woman cannot or must not work. She can work part time and that is good to do but she is not allowed from God's Word to preach in a local church or give Biblestudy to men. Every family is different and I am now thinking of this million people, women, children and older people who refuge from Ukraine and in that country that men has to fight against the agressor with his army. You see a lot of suffering there. We have to pray for this situation and that many people will accept the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior Acts 16:31 in all rest and not in war like now!
I Timothy Chapter 3
I Timothy 3 verse 1
This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
Verse 1: In this chapter the apostle Paul is speaking about the office of a bishop and the office of a deacon and what kind of man you have to be if you want to be a bishop or a deacon. It is what requirements are for such a man who desires such a office! The desire a man can have for this. It is also very important what kind of man you are in daily life, what is your attitude/behavior? It is not just a task. The office of a bishop or overseer has a lot of responsibility and that cannot be taken lightly to be thought about. In Titus 1 verse 5 we read: For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee. Titus who was the fellow laborer of the apostle Paul, a fellow servant of Jesus Christ had the task to do this. This was not easy and it is not easy my brothers and sisters what he had to do: to ordain elders in every city in Crete. This was one of the tasks he get from the apostle Paul. On Crete the Cretians were always liars, evil beasts and slow bellies. The desire to be a bishop or overseer must come from inside of the person. This must be a real desire and if you dear brother/reader has this desire take a look at yourself if whether you can meet the requirements because again the responsibility is very big. An elder or bishop can do his job in a local church or ekklesia! A example: my grandfather was a dike warden. He was responsible for dikes which has to protect the land behind it the polders. This was in the province Zeeland here in the Netherlands. It was and is very responsible work. The dikes has to be in a good condition and must not have weaker parts in it. He was a dyke overseer. He was a very good overseer of the dikes because he was skilled in it. He also taught/ gave lessons to people the trade and they became later also dyke overseer. The office of a bishop or overseer. The word overseer says enough. To have alsways oversight over the local chuch, to control it. It is a lot of work. It is not only to teach people. It is more than that: you have to be awake . Awake for what? For the mental wellbeing of people( spititual life/walk of daily life), not other doctrine than the Gospel of the Grace of God. Romans 16:25-26. A lover of people/ strangers, how to deal with people on a manner which pleases God.
I Timothy 3 verse 2
A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant,
sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
Verse 2: Here in this verse we read the requirements of a bishop and this can come out well in a local church. First a bishop must be blameless. That means that nobody has to say evil or to be criticize you if you are a bishop. For God we are not to blame but men can blame or criticize us for everything. The husband of one wife! He search not for a another woman. Adultery is not in his life. He remains faithful to his wife. In I Corinthians 7 verse 2 we read: Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. In this a bishop must be blameless too. If he is married to his wife he's not looking for a divorce. If he not married he must not to be blamed about fornication, pornography etc. Vigilant what does that mean? Keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties. He has to know and believe the Gospel of the Grace of God and to stand for it and be awake that not false doctrines come into the local church. That he can warn the people from the church for dangers like false doctrines and other things that can withhold them from the truth. He must be sober. What is that? Temperate in the use of spiritous liquors; habitually temperate; as a sober man. Live a sober, righteous and godly life. Of good behaviour: honest, in balance, modest etc. Given to hospitality: a bishop must be a lover of people and of strangers he didn't met before that he loves them with the love of God, the agape. This all has to do with growing in the spiritual life. You can't just have one to be a bishop or overseer. It is the best also for everyone who wants to be a bishop or overseer to do Bibleschool not only for knowledge and deeper knowledge but also how to deal with people in general. Apt to teach. Here again the Bibleschool is a very good instrument to learn a lot of things.
I Timothy 3 verse 3
Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
Verse 3: Not given to wine. What does that mean? Does it mean that a believer, a bishop or overseer is forbidden to drink wine? No not at all but he must not to be a drunkard. In I Timothy 5 vers 23 the apostle Paul says to Timothy the following:Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. In Ephesians 5 verse 18 we read: And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. Why not to drink to much people could ask? Well we see if you drink to much then someone cannot think clear anymore and our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. On that moment we cannot be filled with the Spirit of God what goes with Gods Word. Personally 1 glas of wine is not bad but more than that I personally think not good. Much alcoholic drank is not good for the body. It can lead to slavery if someone drink to much and it is very difficult to stop. I Corinthians 6 verses 19 and 20 we read: What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. No striker: what doest that mean? A bishop must not be a fighter. Not get angry easily! Not greedy of filthy lucre: What does that mean? That someone gives only the honor on himself and not another man. It is someone who boast in himself and all the attendence is on him and that he is the winner. Such a attitude is not good my dear brothers and sisters. This is not the intention that a bishop or overseer has such a attitude and behavior. But patient: longsuffering. Can tolerate a lot. This has also to do with grow. If a man is grown up in the spiritual life he has this more than when he is still a baby or a child in the spiritual life. Not a brawler: that is a screamer. He often argues. This does not fit a bishop or overseer. Not covetous. What is this? Desirous, eager. This is not a attitude for a overseer or bishop.
I Timothy 3 verse 4
One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
Verse 4: What does this mean one that ruleth well his own house. The man in the family has the end responsibility. He is responsible for his wife and as he has children he is also responsible for his kids. He has the last decisions in things. He has well to rule the family at home. Not as a dictator but that everything in the daily life at home is ordely. He should also be in balance. Not soon angry or emotionel in tears etc but stable in Gods Grace and in the Gospel of Gods Grace. We read in Ephesians 6 verse 4 the following verse: And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. In this to bring his children from a child to a adult independent and with God's Word of Grace as Timothy was grown up. You cannot choose for your children, you cannot believe for them. They have to make their own choice also later in partners and how they will grow up their children. I remember that we tried as parents to proclaim them the Gospel of the Grace of God. It is also important that you as fathers and also mother should be there for your children if you have them and that they can also come to you even as they are grown up.
I Timothy 3 verse 5
(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
Verse 5: If a man know not how to rule his own house. If he rules not his own house, not have or take the end responsibility or if he is a dictator or a authoritarian over his wife and children then this man is not suitable for a bishop or overseer. He cannot take care of the local church which is a part of the Church of God. The feeling of reponsibility must definitely be in someone otherwise that person is not suitable. Not everyone can be a overseer. He can have the desire to be a overseer but must must meet the requirements. The man who has the desire to be a overseer must stand for the Gospel of the Grace of God Acts 20:24 and also teach this Gospel of Grace to other men
I Timothy 3 verse 6
Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
Verse 6: What does it mean a novice? We have seen the requirements to be a bishop or a overseer. What he will be and what he has not to do in general. A person newly believer that becomes a local church memberk, has no experience and dont know how to deal with people and take responsibility. He has to be teached from the Word of God before he can teach other persons. Most of these people are pride and that is the danger that they fall into the condemnation of the devil: that the devil also uses this to increase his resistance to the truth! That's why you need men with a lot of experience in much situations and have the oversight. To reach this purpose for a novice is that he first has to learn the Gospel of the Grace of God and later he can do Bibleschool. It is also important that young men or novice first have also work in daily life so that they can learn how to deal with people and get his experience.
I Timothy 3 verse 7
Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
Verse 7: A bishop or overseer must have a good report of them which are without. A bishop has not only be a example for believing people but he has also to be a example for people who do not believe in God. That nothing can be remarked on him. In Proverbs 22 verse 1 we read: A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. It is very important for a bishop or overseer that you be a example for unbelievers. If you are a bishop and people speak evil of you than something is wrong and fall into reproach and in the snare of the devil. The devil then has the advantage over this and this should be prevented. So daily walk, attitude is really important. In Acts 22 verse 12 we read: And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there. Against Timothy the apostle Paul said in I Timothy 4 verse 12: Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. And you see my dear brothers and sisters here for believers but this verse here in I Timothy 3 verse 7: have a good report of them which are without, without God, unbelievers. We see a lot of corruption (sin) in this world and you ask yourself who is suitable for this task? Actually nobody. But you know a local church has to be reigned. She needs a bishop, overseers to reign over the congregation. What is very important in this is that someone who isn't perfect in daily life has the desire to be a bishop or a overseer. That he can reach this position over the years. Maybe first he has to be a helper as a deacon. The next verses are about the requirements to be a deacon.
I Timothy 3 verse 8
Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
Verse 8: The requirements here if you want to be a deacon, most of them are the same like the bishop or overseer. Deacons must be grave. What is this? He must be serious in general. It will not say that he cannot laugh and have pleasure in his life. Serious means in the Scriptures and rightly dividing the Word of truth 2 Timothy 2:15. That he stands for the truth, the Gospel of the Grace of God. Not doubletongued. What does that mean? Answer: to be unfaithful in speech,to utter lies or to speak with flattering lips. Not given to much wine. It will not say that a deacon drink no wine. He can drink wine but doesn't have the urge to wine that it controls him. Not greedy of filthy lucre: Money acquired by dishonorable means.shameful gain. It has always to do with money.
I Timothy 3 verse 9
Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience
Verse 9: What does it mean holding the mystery of the faith? The faith is of course the one faith what we can read in Ephesians 4 verse 5: One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One faith, the faith of Christ. A deacon has to hold this in a pure conscience. He has to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace: One Body, one Spirit, one Hope, One Lord, One faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all. He has to understand this and also stand for this. In I Timothy 1 verse 19 we already saw this: holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck. A lot of people put away this in the time of Paul and nowadays most people put away concerning faith: result is shipwreck. So few people now in this world know the 7 truths of Ephesians 4 verse 3-7. A call to every brother and sister in this world is: learn and believe these 7 truths and stand for the Gospel of the Grace of God and rightly dividing the Word of truth! For almost 40 years ago I learned the truth, the Gospel of the Grace of God and am so happy that I know and believe this for so many years and thank God daily for the riches of His Grace. You can learn and believe the same like me the truth Colossians 1: 5-6. Learn and study the epistles of the apostle Paul and begin to stand for this. You will not regret it because your eyes will be opened my dear brothers and sisters!!!
I Timothy 3 verse 10
And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
Verse 10: First a candidate who wants the office of a deacon must first be proved. He should be fit for this task. Being found blameless. He must have a good reputation of men in the local church and also like the bishop also outside. He has to know the Gospel of the Grace of God and stand and keep the 7 unities of the Spirit in the bond of peace! He has to walk according this Gospel of Grace. Thus the daily life is very important how this candidate behaves himself and how he deals with people. If he was blameless he could take this office of deacon. One of the tasks was to look after elderly people or sick/ weaker people in the local church, to look after the money of the local church, a treasurer. Also apt to teach people from the local church in Biblestudies. From deacon later he could be a bishop. Timothy and Titus and others were helpers of the apostle Paul on his journeys. Later they became leaders of churches in Ephesus and on the island Crete. That is quite possible we see here.
I Timothy 3 verse 11
Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
Verse 11: Even so must their wives be grave. What does this mean? That they are also serious as their husbands who are deacons. They must have been a good example for the local church and also outside the local church. Not slanderers. Not speaking evil of other people like other women in the local church or men and to speak in general evil about people. Sober: Temperate in the use of spiritous liquors; habitually temperate; as a sober man. Live a sober, righteous and godly life. Faithful in all things: that others may trust these women of the deacons. Faithful for the Gospel of the Grace of God. Also awake and not sleepy like many people. Also faithful in daily walk and faithful in helping their husbands who are deacons. Faithful in tasks in the local churches.
I Timothy 3 verse 12
Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
Verse 12: Just as the bishops or overseers the deacons have to have 1 wife and not tend to more women or to desire. A deacon just like a bishop stays with his wife all his life and will not divorce. Divorces has a lot of impact not only for the two who divorce man and woman but if they have children these children are a toy of this fact and are the victims of this fact and act. People of outside has a lot to say about this and speak shame about that and also people from local churches will speak like this. The unbelievers cannot believe this will happen and for them again it is a fact that they won't believe in Christ. If a deacon with his wife has children then those children belong be educated according God's Gospel of Grace. A fathter who is a deacon and his wife has to tell them the good news of the cross so that the children come also to believe in Christ. If he and his wife has not children still he has to rule his own house well, his wife and he has the end responsibility. He has not to rule like a tiran but as a loving husband who God pleases and not himself. He cares also beside God's Word for food, clothes, enough money because of work, wellbeing from his wife and himself. Not that he neglects himself and that life of his wife but that he cares about her and himself on the second place. Brothers and sisters: we cannot do this 100% we know because we are sinners. One rule we have to do is this in Philippians 3 verse 13 and 14: Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
I Timothy 3 verse 13
For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves
a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Verse 13: If a man who is a deacon do the office of a deacon very well het get a good report and more boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. He got more respect from the local church he is. A good example of a deacon we read in Acts 6 verse 9 and 10: Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. Stephen was one of the deacons of the church at Jerusalem under the former Dispensation. In Acts 8 verse 6 we read about Philip who was also a deacon : Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. A faithful and to trust deacon can later lead to a pastor or bishop of a local church. Biblical the deacon works together with the bishops or overseers and with the pastor of the local church. Through more training and experience can he become later also a pastor. The instructions here we have to take very serious as believers in Christ. If you as believer has the desire to be a bishop or a deacon first you have to know and believe the Gospel of the Grace of God Acts 20:24 Romans 16:25-26 and the rightly dividing the Word of truth 2 Timothy 2:15 and stand for this some years and grow in it and then there comes the moment that this desire can be reality. My advice is also to do Bibleschool. See also page Bibleschool. Any moment you can start this Bibleschool.
I Timothy 3 verse 14
These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
Verse 14: The rules, requirements for a bishop or overseer or a deacon Paul explained to Timothy so that the local church at Ephesus and outside of Ephesus might be well ruled by these men. He Timothy was the leader of the church, he was the pastor of all them that believe in Christ there in Ephesus. Paul trusted all these things before written this verse to Timothy and he hoped to come very quickly to Timothy to see him and encourage Timothy and be encouraged by him. Paul trusted this to Timothy because Timothy was a faithful man like Titus and knew very well the responsibility for churches and for the spiritual work of God namely to proclaim the Gospel of the Grace of God. That's why Paul wrote 2 apart epistles to Timothy and one to Titus. These epistles are the pastoral epistles. Timothy was his beloved son in the faith. In I Timothy 1 verse 2 we read again these words:Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. We conclude from this that there was a close relationship between the apostle Paul and Timothy. Paul loved Timothy like a son and there was a deep feeling in his heart for him.
I Timothy 3 verse 15
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God,
which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Verse 15: The apostle Paul hoped to see Timothy very soon in Ephesus. He wanted to visit him but here we read if a tarry long. What does this mean. The apostle Paul was somewhere. Where we don't know. It must be in some place. He had given the instructions to Timothy about the bishops and deacons and women how to behave in the local church. How to behave thyself he said to Timothy in the house of God, the Body of Christ which is the Church of the living God. The Body of Christ is also the pillar and the ground of truth. The whole Body of Christ where we as members are a part of form the pillar and the ground of truth. Read Colossians 1 verse 24-27. In Ephesians 2 verses 21 and 22 we read the following verses: In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
I Timothy 3 verse 16
And without controversy great is the mystery of Godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
Verse 16: Here we have the verse great is the mystery of Godliness. What is that the mystery of Godliness? What is this about? A lot of people think that this has to do with our Lord Jesus Christ and His Divinity. His incarnation but in the context this cannot be. Here is said Godliness. Our Lord is and was without sin. It is about something else what we read here in this verse. In the context we read in verse 15: the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. So it must here in this verse the Church, the Body of Christ and this fits here in this verse: God was manifest in the flesh: in the believers individual, justified in the Spirit. Jesus Christ was and is just. He didn't need to be justified! It is the Body of Christ and we are members of this Body, the Church. Seen of angels. Angels are watching the Church. Preached unto the Gentiles. When our Lord was on earth He spoke only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Jews. Only Jews were in the picture. The Body of Christ and the Gospel of the Grace of God is in general preached unto the Gentiles. Believed on in the world and received up into glory. The last must come in the near future. We will received up into glory, to God's glory I Thessalonians 4 verses 13-18. Read also I Corinthians 15 verses 51-53. He the apostle Paul is speaking about our hope in Christ and forever be with Him and a new body we will receive without sin. What a glorious moment this will be!!! Praise God for this!!!
I Timothy Chapter 4
I Timothy 4 verse 1
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith,
giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
Verse 1: The apostle Paul heard this from God: The Spirit speaketh expressly. In the time Paul wrote this epistle not everything of God's Word of Grace was made known and that's why we read here: Now the Spirit of God speaketh expressly! That in the latter times. What are these times? Nowadays people in the Christian world say that the end time is near and that the book of Revelation will be reality. Now we have the war in East Europe and this frigthens a lot of people here in Western Europe and a lot people think that the end will near according to Prophecy. The end of times began on the day of Pentecost where we read in Acts 2 verses 16 and 17 the following verses: But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Last days, which last days are spoken here? The last days before the Lord should return to earth. Brothers and sisters: is this what we read here the last days what Paul says in this verse 1? The latter times. The latter times has to do with the last days of this Dispensation of Grace whereunder we live now. Ephesians 3:1-3. In the latter times some people shall depart from the faith. This comes from the Greek word apostasy. We see this in daily life my brothers and sisters. Depart from the faith. and give heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. All doctrines who are not the doctrine of the Grace of God is from the devil. The devil is always busy to withdraw persons from the truth and he is a master in it. He is a man killer from the beginning. Turning the Scriptures that it looks like it is the truth. The last 40 years the devil tries through a lot of translations people withhold from the original truth. The last translations of the Dutch Bible are in common language. People cannot through this translation come to believe. 2 Corinthians 11 verse 3 and 4 tells us this: But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. And verse 14 we read: And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. My advice for you is to read the best translation which comes very close to the original Scriptures and that is in English the King James Bible and in Dutch the Statenvertaling. And if you know Gods Gospel of Grace believe this and stand for this because this is for the obedience of faith. Romans 16:25-26 No compromise and not giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.
I Timothy 4 verse 2
Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
Verse 2: Speaking lies in hypocrisy. In 2 Corinthians 11 verse 13-15 we read how the devil works: For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. Satan works through other people, unbelievers who speaking lies in hypocrisy but having their conscience seared with a hot iron. These are the people in the latter times who shall depart from the faith. Brother and sister in our Lord Jesus Christ: let us be awake just like the believers in Berea. Acts 17 verse 11: These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. If we do the same like the believers in Christ my brother and sister then we know what is false doctrine, what is a lie in hypocrisy and how satan works under this Dispensation of Grace. Ephesians 3:1-3. Let us not listen to the lies of satan but let us learn from the truth of God Colossians 1:5-6.
I Timothy 4 verse 3
Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath
created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
Verse 3: Forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from meats. The Catholic church has the celibacy. What does that mean? The state of abstaining from marriage and sexual relations. "a priest who had taken a vow of celibacy" Years later after the apostle Paul suggested the Roman Catholic Church and this became a law for priests or for the ones who wanted to be a priest, monk, nun or higher position like a cardinal or the pope. It was forbidden for them to marry and nowadays we have in the real Catholicism the same rule. And now you hear a lot of sexual abuse in this Catholic church. To abstain from meats. In Catholicism we have also fasting after carnival. In that period people have to remember from eating and drinking and maybe also meats. We my brothers and sisters give thanks for every meal because God hath created all those things and it is good to give thanks before you eat it to God. We can eat everything if we first give thanks to God ! We live not under the law. We have to believe this: Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Galatians 5 verse 1
I Timothy 4 verse 4
For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
Verse 4: Every creature of God is good. It is good to eat meat if you received it with thanksgiving. Yes everything you can eat. Nothing is forbidden. Some meats personally I don't eat. We eat not to much flesh last years. I became aware when my sister was very sick and later passed away. This is not that we don't like meat but some meat is in a certain thing not so very well for your health. It is also very important to eat vegetables, legumes and fruit and for this we also give thanks to God if we eat it. Nothing is to be refused if it be received with thanksgiving. In Romans 14 verse 14 and 15 we read: I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.
I Timothy 4 verse 5
For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
Verse 5: If you as believer God thanks for the food and drink, for every meal you have it is sanctified by prayer but also by the Word of God. For God every food and drink is sanctified by His Word. God creates food for us and says: Here, enjoy it and give thanks. Under this Dispensation of Grace every food is allowed to eat. Nothing is forbidden so let us not listen to people who forbid us to eat food and drink. Surely we give thanks to God. Brothers and sisters: let us not only give thanks for food and drink bu also pray for the people now in the war Ukraine who have no food now for days, no water and cannot escape from the war. This is a tragedy my brothers and sisters! So let us pray that military people come to the insight there in Ukraine that making war is sin and useless and that they may accept Jesus Christ as Savior for their lives!
I Timothy 4 verse 6
If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ,
nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
Verse 6: Timothy received from the apostle Paul the above instructions which he could deal with the believers there in Ephesus. If he would do this he should be a good minister of Jesus Christ and nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine whereunto Timothy hast attained. In II Timothy 3 verse 10 we read: But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience. And in verse 14 we read: But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them. The good doctrine, sound doctrine. What is that my brother and sister? This is the doctrine of Gods Grace. Romans 16 verses 25 and 26:Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith. And you my brothers and sisters, you can learn, study and believe this Gospel of Grace Acts 20:24 which is the truth! You can from now on stand for this too. And tell others about this wonderful news!!!
I Timothhy 4 verse 7
But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
Verse 7 Refuse profane. What is that? Wordly and old wives fables. In Chapter 1 verse 4 we read the following words: Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. What are fables? These are untruths which has nothing to do with God's Word and satan uses this to withdraw us from the truth or withhold us from the truth. He is the father of lies, he is the men killer. In the world you see only untruths, lies and we have here the instruction what to do with fables. Refuse them!!! Exercise thyself rather unto godliness. Read the Word of Gods Grace everyday Acts 20:32! Make it your own and stand for it as a good soldier for Christ my brother and sister!! In 2 Timothy 2 verse 16 and 17 we read: But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; We my brothers and sisters have the Gospel of the Grace of God. We believe in this and let us also stand for it and also the rightly dividing the Word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15, Romans 16:25-26. Be strong in the Lord and in His Word of Grace which is the sound doctrine!!
I Timothy 4 verse 8
For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things,
having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
Verse 8: Bodily exercise! In Paul's days a lot of people did this. Gymnastics, atletic. It is good to move, to walk, to run to have your body in a good condition beside food and drinks. There is nothing wrong with this! To walk every day, cycling every day or run. It only profiteth little. Godliness on the other hand we read here is profitable unto all things. This is more. To be busy with the Word of God's Grace, make things of Gods Word of Grace a part in your life, make it your own is more profitable. We grow in the Grace of God, in the Gospel of Grace, in het spiritual life for the life we live here on earth but it has also effect on the life we shall have after this life here on earth when we will be with the Lord forever in heaven. 24 hours spend on God's Word that is not possible for us. We have also to work, to eat, to sleep, to travel. In general we have to be build up with God's Word of Grace Acts 20:32. This builds us up, we become stronger in the faith. Godliness is profitable unto all things. This brings hope for us in our daily life. In I Timothy 6 verse 5 and 6 we read: Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain. Godliness with contentment is great gain! With this we become satisfied. Nothing in this world can satisfy us, only the godliness of God. Good to exercise and walk, cycle or run but at least this gives us not satisfaction. It is only the Word of Gods Grace which build us 100% up and gives us satisfaction, contentment. Acts 20:32: And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
I Timothy 4 verse 9
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
Verse 9: This is a faithful saying that godliness is profitable unto all things. Having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. It is to accept it because it comes directly from God's Word. God is faithful so His Word is also faithful! You can trust His Word, no doubt about it!
I Timothy 4 verse 10
For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, Who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
Verse 10: The apostle Paul laboured and suffer a lot because he and his co workers fully trusted in the living God. The apostle Paul and we too are ambassadors for Christ. II Corinthians 5 verse 20-21: Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. They all, Paul and his co workers like Silas, Timothy, Titus and others trusted n the living God. God is the Saviour of all men. That doesn't say that all men will be saved forever. He is the Savior specially of those that believe. So reader if you have not trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior why not trust Him now at this moment. Now it is not to late. Sooner it is to late to trust Him as Savior. Accept you are a sinner and need the Savior in your life otherwise you would be eternally dead and wait a terrible judgment. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved Acts 16:31
I Timothy 4 verse 11
These things command and teach.
Verse 11: Timothy had to command and teach others to be concentrated on godliness and not to hope on bodily exercise and to trust in the living God which is a Savior for all the believers. Bodily exercise is good but it is not everything for the believer. You can walk, run, cycle, fitness and this is good for your condition but for us believers is the Word of God and specially the Word of His Grace which build us up in the first place and that's why we trust our living God Who is our Savior in Jesus Christ. In Hebrews 4 verse 12 we read what the Word of God effectuate in our lives my dear brothers and sisters: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
I Timothy 4 verse 12
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers,
in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Verse 12: When the apostle Paul this epistle wrote to his beloved son in the faith Timothy was Timothy a young man. What does the word despise means? To look down on with disrespect or aversion. It is to scorn someone. We see this a lot and that's how wars begin between people. Apparently there were people in Ephesus who scorned Timothy because he was very young and preached the Gospel of the Grace of God and was the leader of the church there. A good example not only in the Word of God but also in the attitude, how to deal with people, gentle, patience, longsuffering etc is very important. Also for a young man. When I became to know the Gospel of the Grace of God I was 21 years old. Very young and now it is almost 40 years ago. To leave the truth was never a option for me in my life despite all the difficulties involved. What I have learned personally from Gods Word is a good attitude, to be gentle, patient, longsuffering. In the beginning older people their reaction was sometimes that they thought that I just came to see and who was I that I teached them? Probably Timothy had feeled the same in Ephesus and he has to command and teach the people there as leader of the church in Ephesus. If we have this problem what we experience now let us read Philippians 2 verse 13: For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
I Timothy 4 verse 13
Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Verse 13: Till I come the apostle Paul said to Timothy here in this verse. It was the plan of Paul to see Timothy again in Ephesus. Maybe the apostle Paul when he wrote this epistle he was not in prison for a time. Till he would came till that moment they would see each other again In the meanwhile the apostle Paul gave Timothy instructions here: give attendence to reading: reading the Scriptures, the Word of His Grace. This is what we also have to do my dear brothers and sisters: reading the Bible and our daily spiritual food namely the Gospel of the Grace of God, the epistles of the apostle Paul: Romans - Philemon. Everything reading in the context and rightly dividing the Word of truth. 2 Timothy 2 :15. To exhortation. What does that mean? To urge! What urging? To urge to search the Scriptures and to the doctrine. The sound doctrine. The Gospel of the Grace of God. To continue in this Gospel of Grace and stand for it.
I Timothy 4 verse 14
Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
Verse 14: Neglect. What does that mean? Forsake. Timothy hath not to forsake the gift that is in him. What kind of gift Timothy was given by prophecy? The gift was this that Timothy was ordained in the ministery of Gospel of the Grace of God and he became a pastor of Ephesus. In that time under prophecy the presbetery, the elders, layed hands on a person to confirm that God had called such a person into the ministry that he may be a leading bishop or elder, pastor. This hath happened to Timothy who was in that time still a young man but faithful in the Gospel of the Grace of God. He stood for this Gospel of Grace. There was no doubt about that. In 2 Timothy 1 verses 4-6 we read: Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. In other words the apostle Paul said here to Timothy dont stop, don't loose the mood and forsake your gift. For us brothers and sisters this is also reality. We too have not to stop with believing God's Word and the Word of Grace Acts 20:32 which build us up every day and stand for it. We have not to compromise with other doctrines, doctrines of men. Don't stop with rightly dividing the Word of Truth. 2 Timothy 2:15. Let us proclaim the Gospel of the Grace of God in this world slide a little further. We live now nearer to the rapture of the church then when Paul lived in his time. He thought that the rapture was near but didn't know that we still live under this Dispensation of Grace.
I Timothy 4 verse 15
Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
Verse 15: Timothy had to think upon those things. What are those things. Give attendance to reading, exhortation, to doctrine, neglect not the gift which is in him. Timothy was in the missionfield. He was the pastor of Ephesus. He had to contine in this and not to stop although there were so many difficulties that maybe sometimes he lost almost the mood to contine. He had to remember what in verse 12 was written:Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. He had to take this responsibility and continue in the pastoral , mission work. If you are in such a position of a pastor then these words here should definitely appeal to you. As a pastor you have the responsibility over all the people who are trusted to you and you have to care about all those people so that the profiting may appear to all.
I Timothy 4 verse 16
Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them:
for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
Verse 16: Take heed unto thyself and unto the doctrine. The doctrine of Grace. This is sound doctrine and remain to stay for this Gospel of the Grace of God. You save yourself from false doctrines, from uncertainty, going back to rules of men , from a lot of misery. A well-rounded understanding of Paul’s epistles will be a safeguard against error and will protect you from being misled or succumbing to the clever schemes of men. If you proclaim the Gospel of Grace , give Biblestudy and preach the Word of Grace the ones that hear you are under this hearing and they make as result from this descisions not to go to false doctines. Grace from God builds up. It give us rest, rest in the finished work of Christ on the cross on Calvary. Everyday we can have this rest if we continue in this Gospel and distinquish this Gospel from the rest of the Bible. 2 Timothy 2:15. Timothy had to do this and we too my brother and sister have to do this!
I Timothy chapter 5
I Timothy 5 verse 1
Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
Verse 1: This chapter is how Timothy brothers and sisters should go with members of the local church, brothers and sisters as head of the church in Ephesus first and these are also guidelines for us my brothers and sisters. Rebuke not a elder. What is to rebuke? To criticise harshly. An elder here is a older man because we see in this verse but intreat him as a father. Deal with a older man in the local church as a father. A older man has a lot of wisdom, he has a lot of experience to rule over people, rule a local church. He is a senior and if you like Timothy are a young man you cannot criticise such a older man in the concregation to hard. You have to be careful with this. You have to have respect for the older man. The younger men as brethren with brotherly love, this is the love of God. With a lot of patience, longsuffering etc. Let God do the work in you! This should be a priority in practice. I can tell you in all those years my wife and me who have no local church for almost 30 years, this works also without this!
I Timothy 5 verse 2
The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
Verse 2: The elder women as mothers. This has to do with respect. See them as your mother. They have more experience than you as younger person in the local church. It is with respect to deal with older women and older men in your local church and outside the local church. Show love to these people, this is the love of God with a lot of patience, gentleness, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, faith. These are the fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5 verse 22, 23. The younger women as sisters. To respect them like this. To approach them like sisters as if this is your own family sister. With all purity. The younger men in the local church has not to see them as sex objects. They are also creatures of God and see it like this with a lot of respect and they can learn a lot from God's Grace just as the younger brothers and can grow spiritual under the sound doctrine!!
I Timothy 5 verse 3
Honour widows that are widows indeed.
Verse 3: What is a real widow? In Ephesians 6 verse 2 we read: Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise. In verse 9 and 10 in this chapter 5 we read: Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man. Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. Evidently in the local church of Ephesus there were a lot women who were widows. A read widow we read was above 60 years and have been the wife of one man. The requirements we can read in verse 9 and 10 what we see here above. To honour is more than only respect. It is someone commendable put in the spotlight. It means support the widows with God's Word first and maybe also financial support when she has no children or grandchildren. The local church can support her financial and also with clothes, food etc. That was the task for the local churches. Nowadays we see this not anymore or less in this world. Here in the Netherlands the authorities have created organizations like the food and clothing banks for poor people.
I Timothy 5 verse 4
But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home,
and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
Verse 4: If a widow have children or nephews. They have to learn first practice godliness at their own house and as a result they can requite their parents. The widow in this had brougt up their children and now the children can do something back because she is more than 60 years old and widow. They can support her not only financial, clothes but can also tell her about Gods Word of Grace. This is acceptabel for God. It is His will that this happens.
I Timothy 5 verse 5
Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
Verse 5: She that is a widow indeed: more than 60 years old, the wife of one man, brought up their children if she had children, she has lodged strangers, she has washed the feet of saints, if she has diligently followed every good work. Desolate, to be lefted. Than it is time to trust God for such a widow and for her is it is very important to be in prayer an supplications night and day. Let us read Ephesians 2 verse 10: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. This is what a widow who is indeed widow. . She trusts God and not on the circumstance whereunder she lives after her husband passed away. She is busy with the Word of God and with supplications and prayers to God night and day. In I Corinthians 7 verse 32 we read: But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord" In a country like the Netherlands people get when they reached the age of 67 and some months you get a AOW basic benefit and most widows get also a widow's pension because their husbands passed away and had worked all their life for this. You see not so much local churches provide financial support. The widow is like the unmarried person and can spend a lot of time on the Word of God and how she can please the Lord and walk in His works Ephesians 2 verse 10
I Timothy 5 verse 6
But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
Verse 6: But she that liveth in pleasure is dead. What does that mean? The indulgence or satisfaction of one's own desires. This can never bring one experientially the life that every believer in Christ should enjoy. In Romans 8 verse 6 we read: For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. The widow who lived in self indulgence did not need to have the church provide for her. She did not deserve it. Thats why in verse 14 is written the following words: I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. Younger women here are widows who lost their husbands under the 60 years old. You and I can imagine that such women has more desire to have again a husband and some ot them lived in pleasure. To marry was the best solution for these widows.
I Timothy 5 verse 7
And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.
Verse 7: These things. Which things? Paul gives Timothy instructions for admonishing believers in Ephesus. That Timothy has to lead this, take the leading in it, that people has to be blameless. What is that blameless? Guiltless. That nobody could condemn these saints and say evil about thim. We see this a lot in the world and there is a lot of bad talk about believers, Christians in this world. The world is looking on us. This we see everyday. We have to walk as brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ and to walk that nobody can speak evil about it.
I Timothy 5 verse 8
But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house,
he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
Verse 8: Strong words of the apostle Paul first to Timothy and also to us. If any provide not for his own. This is not only to have work to support your family, also to take care about your family and to teach your family the sound doctrine, the Gospel of the Grace of God so that they will not fall away from the faith and go after false doctrines. If it is so than such a person has denied the faith and is worser than a unbeliever. In 2 Thessalonians 3 verses 11 and 12 we read:For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. It is very important that any man provide for his own, for his own family. The one who neglects his family he or she is worser than a unbeliever. To have work is important here in the Netherlands and in other places in the world in general. This gives the person a feeling of self-esteem and a good motivation and you get every month money so you can support your family. Not only to feed them, also to cloth them with clothes, school, neat appearance.
I Timothy 5 verse 9
Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man.
Verse 9: A widow was a woman of 60 years old or older. This was the criterion in the time when the apostle Paul lived and this still applies nowadays. Having been the wife of one man. She was married once and had no 2 or 3 different men. She had been faithful to her husband until he passed away. I remember my mother. When my father passed away to be with the Lord my mother was of the age of 72. Last year my mother passed away to be with the Lord on the age of 93. She was a widow for more than 21 years and that is a very long time according to human concepts. She never married another man after my father's death. It was good that she was alone without my father. Surely she missed him very much but hath not the desire to marry another man. She stayed all those years alone in her own house.
I Timothy 5 verse 10
Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.
Verse 10: In this verse we see the requirements for a widow. Not only to be 60 years or older. The daily life is also very important. What kind of person the widow is and if she can meet these requirements here written. That she recognize in her life that she can walk in the Works which God had before ordained. Ephesians 2 verse 10. That no man can say something evil about her. She is busy with God's Word, the Bible and her hope is on God and not on men or herself.
I Timothy 5 verse 11
But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;
Verse 11: Strong words for young Timothy in Ephesus. He was the leader of the local church. There were younger women who were widows. But they were no real widows because before this verse we have learned that a widow must be 60 years or older. Younger widows will marry another man and are only focused on this so that they are not busy with God's Word and live according God's Gospel of Grace in general. They want a family, children etc and then there is no time for God and His Word. They want more pleasures, more carnally minded. It will not say they are not saved in Christ. It will say that they forsake God's Word in general and it is very difficult to motivate them so that's why Paul Timothy gives this instruction to refuse them for the work in the ministry. The solution for these widows is to marry.
I Timothy 5 verse 12
Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
Verse 12: Having damnation. What does that mean? God cannot use those women in the local church. They will not serve God through the Gospel of Grace because they are carnally minded so God cannot work in them. For the local church in Ephesus were these women not an asset. That's why Timothy had to refuse them for the ministry. What I personally see is that those women get no task in the local churches but they were welcome to hear the Gospel of the Grace of God. Still they could be listeners
I Timothy 5 verse 13
And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and
not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
Verse 13: The young widows learn to become passive, and got bored, began to speak evil things which they ought not to do. From house to house they went and made troubles. They were troublemakers and gossips. This was a real problem and the apostle Paul gave therefore Timothy instructions what to do about this. Marrying shouldn’t lead to idleness (Pr.31:27). The right response is to requite your husband for supporting you instead of busy-bodying from house to house. In Titus 2 verse 3 we read: The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things. The real danger for young women or young widows is that they are not busy with God's Word but want to have a new relation with a man and are only focused on these things. Older women like the older women above 60 are not so focused on this. They can more focus on God's Word because they have already a lot of experience in life. This example the younger women has to follow. If younger widows have also children that they have to brought up their children alone and for most of these women this is a very hard life so that they desire a husband for their lives again. The solution is in the next verse and also what happened with these women here in Ephesus.
I Timothy 5 verse 14
I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house,
give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
Verse 14: I will therefore. It wasn't not only the wish or will of the apostle Paul that the younger women marry. This is the solution for the problem what happened in Ephesus. Not only there, also nowadays it is better that younger women if they are widows or not that they marry a man, bear children, guide the house. This is to rule the house, raise her children with her husband. Rule the house or guide the house is the care in the household. What does it mean give none occasion to the adversary? Give no place to the adversary and that is the devil to speak reproachfully. What is reproachfully? To blame her. He is a master in it to help you to blame others or he is also a master to blame you. In this case is to blame from his side. To whisper this into the ears that a person is dumb, stupid always, that a person is nothing etc. He is the great accuser and tries everyday to blame us.
I Timothy 5 verse 15
For some are already turned aside after Satan.
Verse 15: Some of the women in Ephesus and that were widows, were from the truth, they left the Gospel of the Grace of God through any longer willing to learn further and believed the lies of satan. Turned aside after satan. How easy it is to believe the lie and how difficult it is to believe the truth! As we look into this dark world wherein we live we see that men is a liar through his nature, the Adamic nature, the sin nature, through the fall of man. Satan is the father of lies and in him is no truth. He is a men killer from the beginning Genesis chapter 3 (read this chapter). He can hold people whole their lives to believe his lies and so withhold them from God's truth, the Gospel of the Grace of God. Through the fall of man man became a sinner and through this a liar and it is therefore that man in general easy believe lies of satan and not search for the truth. So some people were after satan and his lies and for Timothy because he was the leader of the local church of Ephesus was this very difficult how to handle with this so we read in II Timothy 2 verses 24- 26 the following verses: And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
I Timothy 5 verse 16
If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them,
and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.
Verse 16: Lastly, if any man or woman who believes in Christ supported their widows with food and money to help them, the local church have not to help them with money, food etc because the local church would have more money to support widows with no kids. These widows with no kids are the older widows and not the younger ones. These are the widows indeed which we have read in verse 10. So the task was for the members of the local church to help those younger women financial with money, clothes, food. Nowadays a lot of widows get widow pension from of the pension fund because the husband had worked all his life for the pension. People get when they reached now 67,5 years the basic pension for people from the authorities here in the Netherlands. So here in the Netherlands it is well organized if you compare this with other countries. In the time of Paul the local church and individual believers took care about widows we see here in this verse.
I Timothy 5 verse 17
Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
Verse 17: This verse and the next verse are about the elders or elder/bishop. We read also bishop or overseer. A bishop is a good name because he had the end responsibility. What I told you before is this that my grandfather a dike supervisor from profession in the province Zeeland (The Netherlands) He was responsible for all the dikes that they may be strong enought to protect the polders (land) behind the dikes. So a bishop is a ruler of the local church and had the end responsibility over the local church. over the members of the church. There were elders that rule the local church in Ephesus and outside Ephesus in other local churches and had to be respected by people. Double honour refers not only to an abundance of respect and obedience from members of the church but also reasonable pay. It means two fold! Respect and the term for “honor” in the original language includes the notion of a price or compensation. Special the the elders who labour in the Word and doctrine. Who preached the Word of God's Grace Acts 20:24, Romans 16:25-26. This is the sound doctrine my dear brothers and sisters! II Timothy 4 verse 3-4 (read those verses). In I Corinthians 9 verse 14 and 15 we read: Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void. The apostle Paul never asked money or goods from people because that could be talked about ugly and he didn't want it because people had to come to believe and learn the truth for free. And also Paul was a tentmaker from profession so with tent sales he could provide for one's own livelihood.
I Timothy 5 verse 18
For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
Verse 18: The ox that treadeth out the corn shalt thou not muzzle. In Israel the grain was threshed most of the times with oxes. They walked upon it. Sometimes with a sled behind it. The straw served as food for the oxen. That's why oxen were not muzzled. In Deuteronomy 25 verse 4 we read the following verse: Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn. The labourer is worthy of his reward. If you have work for example on the end of every month you get your salary, your money for that month because you have worked for it and that is your reward. The labourer here is the overseer or bishop or pastor who labour under the members of the local church. The one who brings the Word of Gods Grace and rightly dividing the Word of Truth! According to God's Word people of the local church has to pay him. It is only the Gospel of the Grace of God wherefore some person who preach this can be paid. Another Gospel is no gospel so it is unrighteous to pay such a person. This is what you see in the Christian world. The apostle Paul never used this. He never asked money or goods from other persons. It is good that we work in this world and ask no money from people if we preach the Gospel of the Grace of God. No one can blame you if you do like this and follow the apostle Paul in this.
I Timothy 5 verse 19
Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.
Verse 19: This verse is about an elder in the local church which is blamed because of sin or negligence. What we see now in this world is often accusations of sexually transgressive behavior. If you have such a accusation in the local church then 2 or three witnesses are are needed for this. In Deuteronomy 19 verse 15 we read the following verse: One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established. This is according the law. 1 person is not enough to tell the truth. 2 or 3 persons are needed to tell the truth. We see now in professional churches here in the Netherlands that accusations more and more no longer within the local church is resolved but that people are going to go to court to file a case. This is of course to be ashamed of and sad that this is happening: to go to court to a judge of whom you do not know whether he or she is a believer in Christ.
I Timothy 5 verse 20
Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear
Verse 20: Why you have to rebuke persons that sin before all people of the local church? Answer: that others also may fear. This was another instruction which the apostle Paul gave to Timothy who was the leader of the local church at Ephesus. Someone who sinned in the local church and then you can think about adultery or sexually transgressive behavior (nowadays) or hypocrisy: to tell others to live a godly life and himself not doing this. Before all to rebuke such a person so that others also may fear. So that the other members of the local church may learn about this and prevents them from doing this. A example of this we read in Galatians 2 verse 11-14: But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision. And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? Here we see the apostle Paul to rebuke Peter because of his hypocrite walk/attitude.
I Timothy 5 verse 21
I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels,
that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.
Verse 21: I charge thee before God. What does that mean? To attest, to witness Timothy before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels. The instructions what the apostle Paul gave to Timothy, his son in the faith should be followed by so. Which instructions? Them that sin rebuke for all people for example. Not only for a while those instructions but for all time in the local church. Before God, the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels. Who are the elect angels? These angels are the angels of the Lord. No fallen angels. The fallen angels are with satan. The elect angels are obliging spirits. All the instructions what Timothy received and what we have read before from the apostle Paul he had to observe without preferring one before another. All people are equal. Timothy had not to be partial and he had not doing by partiality.
I Timothy 5 verse 22
Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.
Verse 22: How suited is here the apostle's caution not to lay hands. First Timothy and every pastor or head of the local church has to test persons for a task in the church. You cannot give a task to someone who is just a believer because he is a babe in the faith and he can fall very easy. So you have to be very careful with this. Never Timothy had to be a partaker of the sins of other men in the local church. Not for nothing the apostle Paul warns here Timothy and also us to keep ourselves pure. Keep distance from those who sin and this is what the apostle Paul in general says. One is known by the company one keeps. This is very true. With other words do not sin like others. We have the choice just like Timothy had, not to sin and to keep himself pure.
I Timothy 5 verse 23
Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.
Verse 23: Here is another instruction which the apostle Paul gave to Timothy and inclusive to us too as members of the Body of Christ. This is a remarkable verse. The gifts of healing what we read in the I Corinthians and before Acts 28 verse 28 are disappeared. Timothy had problems with his health. The apostle Paul had problems with his eyes. A lot of people nowadays have problems with their health. Against the believers in Galatia the apostle Paul said in Galatians 4 verse 15 the following verse: Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me. And in II Corinthians 12 verses 7-9 we read:And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. The gifts of healing were disappeared. The apostle Paul had not the gift anymore of healing people. It is now God Who works through His Grace and His Grace is sufficient. It is not that God cannot heal people. He is almighty to do it only He works now under this Dispensation of Grace Ephesians 3:1-3 different with people than under the former Dispensation. Timothy had a heavy and responsible task as leader of the church at Ephesus. It wasn't easy to for Timothy to take always the responsibility in the church. He was from nature a weak person and had problems with his stomach and belly. The remedy was a little wine to drink. In 2 Timothy 4 verse 20 we see on the end of Paul's life the following: Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick. Paul couldn't heal Trophimus anymore. Maybe Trophimus was fatally ill because Paul left him at Miletum. I my younger life I remember very well that my father had sometimes kidney stone attacks. This is very painful. He took then a glass of cognac, a stronger drink to soften the pain and I remember most of the times after a half day he could move again. Also a lot of medicins help a lot of people in their lives. Also therapies against cancer etc. We have to remember brothers and sisters that our Lord gives us not eternal life here on earth, not a new body here but in heaven. We are citizens of heaven and we will get a new body wherein there is no sickness and sin. This is our hope Philippians 3: 20-21! Romans 8 verse 18: For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
I Timothy 5 verse 24
Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.
Verse 24: As we know Timothy was the leader of the church at Ephesus. Ephesus was situated near the Middle Sea and it had a harbor. There was a lot of sin in this city. The people in Ephesus had a goddess Diana or Artemis. She was the goddess of love. In Acts 19 verses 24-29 we read: For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth. Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands: So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. In this pasage we read about the trade in honor of Diana or Artemis which almost was disappeared because a lot of people accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. Demetrius became irritated and angry because his trade work was almost gone and began a uproar under the civilians of Ephesus. His sins were open beforehand. These are the works of Galatians 5 verse 19- 21: Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. We see it very often my dear brothers and sisters and sometimes we do the same. Just as Timothy we have to deal with it but not lightly. Just as Timothy we have to overcome evil with good and that is to be patient in this and let God's Spirit to the work in us.
I Timothy 5 verse 25
Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.
Verse 25: Also the good works of some were manifest in Ephesus and nowadays also you see it in believersYou can recognize them. What are the good works? Galatians 5 verse 22 and 23 we read: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. These good works and they that are otherwise cannot be hid. You see them because they are manifest.
I Timothy chapter 6
I Timothy 6 verse 1
Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy
of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.
Verse 1: Servant or slave. In the time the apostle Paul lived was under the Roman Empire. In this Empirium you had a lot of slaves. What does it mean under the yoke? We learn from God's Word that every person is before God equal. God is no Respecter of persons. In relation towards each other no person is equal. The husband is not the same as his wife in the marriage. We have different tasks. So you had 2000 years ago servants and masters in the Roman Empire. The servants were under the yoke. Under rules and they had to obey their masters and give them worthy of all honour. To respect masters so that the name of God and His doctrine of Grace be not blasphemed. The instructions were Timothy given to believing servants. A example of a slave in Paul's day was Onesimus. In Philemon we read in verse 10 and 11 the following verses:I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me" We brothers and sisters do not exactly know what it is to be a slave or servant but if we have work we work under people who are above us. These people in work we have to respect them and know that we serve God instead of men. Then the doctrine of God, the sound doctrine of the Grace of God is not blasphemed.
I Timothy 6 verse 2
And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them
service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
Verse 2: A good example of a believing master who had later a believing slave was Filemon. The slave was Onesimus. Onesimus came to believe when he met Paul in prison in Rome. In Philemon 11 and 12 we read:I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me: Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels. Onesimus runned away from his master in his unbelieving state and came in Rome to believe through God's the Gospel of the Grace of God which Paul preached. Here in this verse the believing masters just as Philemon had to handle good with the servants who were also believers because they are brothers. The servants who were believers were faithful, beloved and they were partaker of the benefit, for the good, for the assistance. These instructions Timothy had to give to these men, these masters. In Ephesians 6 verse 9 we read: And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him. Slavery what we read about 2000 years ago in Paul's day we don't have this. Still there is much hidden slavery in this world. As long as we live here on earth this will be because we live in a broken world.
I Timothy 6 verse 3
If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
Verse 3: If any man teach otherwise! Apparently there were men in Ephesus who teached not the doctrine which is according to godliness. In Galatians 1 verses 6-8 we read: I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. They teached false doctrines, were not agree with the wholesome words of the Lord Jesus Christ ac ccording His Gospel of Grace. This we read in Romans 16:25-26: Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: So the Gospel of the Grace of God are the words of our Lord Jesus Christ from heaven. The sound doctrine is what we read here is the doctrine which is according to godliness. Nowadays most men preach otherwise. The majority of people hear false things instead of the truth. The so named Gospel which is a mix of the Gospel of the Kingdom, a social Gospel with a little bit of the Gospel of the Grace of God is no Gospel. This is not according godliness and is no sound doctrine but a tangle and maze. This is not the will of God 1 Timothy 2 verse 3-4. Read this. His will is that every person became to know the truth. But we see in general the truth is denied and the majority of believers believe the lie instead of the truth. II Timothy 4 verse 3-4 we read: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. Personally I believe this is now what we see in this world: people are believing the lie and turn away their ears from the truth. What we just saw in Galatians: a person who teach another doctrine he or she is accursed. This means there is no blessing upon such ministry. It creates confusion for people who hear it and people are not build up. That's why I call you brother or sister in the Lord Jesus Christ here in the Netherlands and outside: learn the Sound doctrine which is after godliness, the Gospel of the Grace of God and you will personally be build up in your spiritual life.
I Timothy 6 verse 4
He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes
of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
Verse 4: If any man teach otherwise then the Gospel of the Grace of God he teach false doctrine. Also a half truth is a false doctrine. This man is proud. knowing nothing. Strong words my dear brothers and sisters but this is the truth. As long as one of you hear false doctrine, the ones who teach this are proud and knowing nothing. What you see is that most of these teachings are build on feelings of men and not based on the Word of God's Grace. The person who teach the false doctrine is also highminded. He thinks that he is someone and you see many times that those persons look down on other people. If you want to talk with them they begin to strife and to discuss and don't listen to you. From this there comes envy, strife, railings and evil surmisings. Envy is jealously, another word for strife is disagreements. railings: barriers and evil surmisings: evil opinions. Such a person cannot be a good soldier of Christ. How do we handle this? In 2 Timothy 2 verse 23 and 24 we read: But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient. These words will help us brothers and sisters who know the truth to handle with such persons and patience is very important when you met those who teach otherwise.
I Timothy 6 verse 5
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth,
supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
Verse 5: Perverse disputings of men. What does that mean? Unreasonable talkings, debates of men of corrupt minds. They don't have a sound mind because they don't know the truth. Destitute of the truth. In 2 Timothy 3 verse 8 we read: Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. These are men who are fallen from God's truth, God's Gospel of Grace Acts 20:24. We have a lot of them here in this world and this continues to grow. Men supposing that gain is godliness: That godliness for wordly honor and winning. That being religious and so named pious and to try to be populair so that people like those men and heaven them. From such men withdraw thyself. Strong words and what does that mean? Take distance from such men and be not involved in their religious and thinkings.
I Timothy 6 verse 6
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
Verse 6: A great gain is godliness with contentment. What does this mean godlines? In Titus 1 verse 1 we read:Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness. Answer is to what is godliness: Acknowledging of the truth, knowledge of the truth because to know this and stand for it everyday you serve God as believer my dear brother and sister. To be busy with the truth every day, with the Gospel of the Grace of God. Not only to read it but also in the practise. To walk according the Gospel of the Grace of God, to walk according your position in Christ. The knowledge of this Gospel of Grace leads to godliness with great gain. Read also Romans 16 verse 25-26 and Colossians 1:5, 6. Dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ: This Gospel of Grace build us up, we become stronger in the faith and keep us safe from the law, laws of men and false doctrines of men. The Gospel of the Grace of God is the answer for all the confusions we see in the so named Christian world. So learn this Gospel of God's Grace which is the Gospel for today my dear brother and sister and through this Gospel you get saved forever!!
I Timothy 6 verse 7
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
Verse 7: If you as believer in Christ see this above written you realize that you came naked in this world and will leave in the bodily death on the end of your life naked this world. Nothing you can take with you. Naturally we as men want more and more things in our life. We are never satisfied. We collect treasures on earth but all those treasures we cannot take with us when we go to heaven. We have a heavenly hope I Corinthians 15:51-53. As believers in Christ we have to study God's Word and God's Grace and teach others about it. Later we have to give a account before our Lord, everyone of us! The Lord will not ask us what we have done with all the treasures we had on earth. That is not important. All materials we have now at our homes we cannot take with us. They will remain on earth. Also when we will be caught up into heaven when the Lord comes for us His Body. I Thessalonians 4:13-18. In a twinkling of a eye we will be changed then. So to collect things is nice but for eternity it means nothing. In Job 1 verse 21 we read: And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: theLordgave, and theLordhath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Job the servant of God knew this very well. Despite everything Job trusted God! Job 1 verse 22: In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
I Timothy 6 verse 8
And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
Verse 8: Very strong words of the apostle Paul! Having food and raiment. What is raiment? Clothes. So food and clothes are enought in this life. What we hear now from the war in Ukraine is that a lot of people have not enough food or no food at all. This is a very, very serious problem. If you have no food for many days you will die. Here in Western Europe and a big part of the world there is enough food but I saw also on television that many people in Africa will die of hunger if we do nothing to help them! This is also serious my dear brothers and sisters. So the ones of us who have food and raiment let them be content with. Most of us my dear brothers and sisters have more than only food and clothes like houses to live in, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, work etc. We have to be satisfied with this all and not inclined to any more and that is very difficult!!
I Timothy 6 verse 9
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into
many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
Verse 9: People who want to be rich fall into temptation and a snare. In this world lust for money, wealth is a sin. A lot of unbelievers do this. To fall into this leads to many foolish and hurtful lusts and it is very difficult to come out of this. It is a form of slavery. In Proverbs 11 verse 28 we read the following verse: He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a branch. Also the longing for more things has to do with our flesh brother and sister and this is not what God here teaches because He said in verse 8: Having food and raiment let us be therewith content. We have a lot of advertising for lotteries. This is to attract people to a lot of money. We as believers must flee from this. Set your affection on things above Colossians 3 verse 1-3 tells us. In the Netherland we have the saying: money does not make you happy. Let us as believers just as the apostle Paul be happy with all what we have and to be content. We have all blessings in our Lord Jesus Christ Ephesians 1:3: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. God's Word of Grace builds us up and let us see what we have in Christ and that we can be content. That we can be different than people around us who does not believe. All the riches we have here on materials like gold or other things we cannot take to heaven my dear brothers and sisters. To be rich has little value compared to eternity. We are rich in our Lord Jesus Christ!
I Timothy 6 verse 10
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after,
they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Verse 10: The love of money is the root of all evil! This is true my dear brother and sister. The longing for money is the root of all evil. Some people have this longing and go for it but have erred from the faith. This happened also in the time when Paul lived 2000 years ago. It can bring a person into a lot of difficulties ans stress in his or her life. Some of them are thieves. Most robbers are looking for money. When I was a teenager two young boys of the school became robbers and were caught by the police an put in jail for a time. For them it was the longing for money etc. It made in that time a deep impression on me. It is sin and maybe also a kind of sickness my dear brothers and sisters. But it ends in a lot of misery and the persons themselves who commit these crimes are very unhappy and not lucky in their lives: it pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
I Timothy 6 verse 11
But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
Verse 11: But thou! There is a change here. We have seen that the love of money is the root of all evil and this brings a lot of sorrow and misery. But thou, O man of God. This is what Paul not only said here to Timothy, also to us as men and women of God we hear this too. Flee these things. We have known Christ and we have to follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and meekness. These are the fruit of the Spirit my dear brothers and sisters and let us follow this. Galatians 5 verse 22 and 23 we read: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness , faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And in verse 25 of the same chapter: If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
I Timothy 6 verse 12
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called,
and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
Verse 12: What does it mean fight the good fight of faith? This is what we can read in Ephesians 6 verses 11-12:Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
It is to stand for the truth, the Gospel of the Grace of God and rightly dividing the Word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15. This has to be a part of us, of our life and not to make compromise. The second here is lay hold on eternal life: W|hat does that mean? We have eternal life, this is our position. Personally I believe Colossians 3 verses 1-3 is here the case: If ye then be risen with Christ seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on thins above, not on things on the earth. Fro ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. We are called unto eternal life in Christ my dear brothers and sisters! What a beautiful verse this is!! And Timothy hast professed a good profession before many witnesses! What a good example this Timothy and we have to follow him in this as believers in Christ. We have to step in the steps of the apostle Paul and that of Timothy and walk like them. On the end of the Paul's life we read in 2 Timothy 4 verse 7: I have fought a good fith, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith" Oh brother and sister, that we may say this also like the apostle Paul on the end of our lives too!
I Timothy 6 verse 13
I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and
before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;
Verse 13: I give thee charge. This is I command you in the sight of God. The apostle Paul could say this because the commands through revelations the apostle Paul got this direct from God. This is the God Who quicekeneth all things. These commandments were the commandments from God. Our God is alive. He is the God Who made everything and gives eternal life in His Son Jesus Christ! He is God of life, not from death. He can make you, yes you He can make alive in Christ Jesus! You have only to believe that He died for you on the cross for your sins, is buried and is resurrected for your righteousness and that He gives you the eternal life. Romans 4 verse 25, I Corinthians 15:3-4. Just before He bore our punishment our Lord stood before Pontius Pilate and He witnessed a good confession. Why? He was without sin and died for us sinners on that cross. In Luke 23 verse 1-3 we read the following verse: And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. And in Matthew 27 from verse 11 we read: And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. Pilate was the Roman governor on the moment that our Lord Jesus Christ was captured just before His crucifixion on the cross. In John 18 verse 33-38 we read: Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. This was what our Lord Jesus Christ said against Pontius Pilate before He was crucified for the world to bear all the sins of the world , for every person, on the cross! This is that good confession our Lord did before Pilate.
I Timothy 6 verse 14
That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Verse 14: That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable. On which commandment had to keep Timothy? The answer is follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. This Timothy had to do until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Rapture I Thessalonians 4:13-18, I Corinthians 15: 51-53. This had Timothy to do and indirect it is also a commandment for us believers who know the truth and stand for this! Timothy was physically not such a strong man and we know from ourselves we have also weak things in our bodies. We can identify us with Timothy and also with the apostle Paul. They were men like us and had their weaker things, problems in their bodies like eyesight or stomach and belly. We just like Timothy have not to stop but continue in the Gospel of the Grace of God and stand for it and proclaim, make it known to everyone who want to hear. In I Timothy 1 verse 18 we read: This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: The appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ. What a day, moment this will be my dear brothers and sisters!! This is our hope too!! And this moment is nearer then in Paul's day my dear brothers and sisters! Again until that moment just like Timothy we have too to fight the good fight of faith and lay hold on eternal life!
I Timothy 6 verse 15
Which in His times He shall shew, Who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
Verse 15: In His times He shall shew Who is the blessed and only Potentate, King of Kings and Lord of lords. What a beautiful verse. We shall see Him on one moment! In I Corinthians 15 verse 51-53 we read: Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. What a wonderful moment this will be! Then we shall see Him, the only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords! Oh what a joy this will be. And this day is coming my dear brothers and sisters! Till that time we have to tell people how they can be saved through the Good News, the Gospel of Gods Grace, through our Lord Jesus Christ. How they can receive God's Grace and peace through the Lord Jesus Christ. II Corinthians 5 verses 19-21. Now we suffer on this earth my dear brothers and sisters but we have a heavenly hope in our Lord Jesus Christ! We shall be changed in a moment and in a twinkling of a eye! In Romans 8 verse 18 we read: For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Oh how can we enjoy this verse! Our hope is fixed in our Lord Jesus Christ!
I Timothy 6 verse 16
Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto;
whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to Whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
Verse 16: God hath only immortality. We men are mortal! This because of the fall of man Romans 5 verse 12 (read this verse). With this body we cannot come in the place where God is in heaven. He dwells in the light which no man can approach unto whom no man hath seen, nor can see. Only God dwells in that light and own this light. God is light. This is the same light which God said in the beginning of creation: let there be light! And there was light! Later God made the big light for the day the Sun see Genesis chapter 1! No man can see the light of God. We cannot even look to long to the Sun because this is not good for our eyes. We cannot as men approach the light of God, where God dwells. To Whom and that is God be honour and power everlasting. Amen. God is due all the glory my brothers and sisters!!
I Timothy 6 verse 17
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded,
nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
Verse 17: Timothy had to charge them that are rich in this world not to be highminded. What is highminded? To be arrogant! To look condescending to people who were poor. Nor trust in uncertain riches. My dear brother and sister: your life on earth is short, very short. What is 10 years? Time flies! If we are rich this riches are uncertain. It could be that tomorrow we are not anymore on earth. Our life here on earth is very vulnerable. So we have to trust in the living God, Who gives us richly all things to enjoy. He gives us all the blessings in Christ. The more we read and study the Bible the more we trust on uncertain riches because for eternity those riches means nothing. Our human nature, our old nature wants more and more. We have to be content what we have in Christ my dear brothers and sisters and remember we are not anymore from ourselves but from Him, God! Read again Galatians 2 verse 20!
I Timothy 6 verse 18
That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
Verse 18: That the rich people do good. That they trust not in uncertain richrs but be rich in good works which God had before ordained. Ephesians 2 verse 10 tells us: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. The rich people had to do this and this Paul said to Timothy as a order to encourage the rich men to be rich in good works and walk according to the Gospel of the Grace of God. Ready to help distribute the Gospel of God's Grace. To help to make it known. To communicate willingly with people the Good News of the cross with people. Only not that but also to be generous contributors (in the costs) and gladly share with others the riches of God's Grace.
I Timothy 6 verse 19
Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
Verse 19: Thank God for men and women who give from their riches to God's glory, to distribute the Gospel of the Grace of God through a lot of money and goods. It must be that way my dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ if you are rich give things from your riches to organizations like Berean Bible Society in the form of gifts. For sure as people are hungry because of famine, war the first things people need is food and drink and beside that also God's Word of Grace. That they may lay hold on eternal life. That means to hold fast also on the sound doctrine which may contain also eternal life. To be concentrated on that than on things on earth with uncertain riches.
I Timothy 6 verse 20
O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane
and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
Verse 20 On the end of this epistle the apostle Paul encourages or exhorts Timothy here in this verse: Keep that which is committed to thy trust. That deposit. That deposit was the form of sound words which Timothy had heard from the apostle Paul which Paul had received from the risen Lord Jesus Christ from heaven through revelations. Timothy was responsible to keep it, to guard this and defend it, the sound doctrine, the doctrine of Grace whatever the cost. And he had to avoid profane and vain babblings. These babblings brought fightings and discussions with it and this Timothy and we too must avoid. And oppositions of science falsely so called. Some people had erred through this concerning the faith. This was in the time of Paul and Timothy and nowadays most people in the world refuse to know and stand for the the Gospel of the Grace of God. A small minority in this world knows and stand for this Gospel of God's Grace, the sound Doctrine. Most people are believing in science falsely like the evolution theory and other human theories who are false which the devil will let them believe. We who know the truth and stand for it let us like Timothy hold fast the sound Doctrine of God's Grace and rightly dividing the Word of Truth 2 Timothy 2:15, Romans 16:25-26
I Timothy 6 verse 21
Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.
Verse 21: Again you see a lot of people nowadays professing and have erred concerning the faith. They are scientifically minded and don't believe in the faith from God. Through the science they think they don't need God in their lives. For them God exists not. Timothy here was couraged by the apostle Paul with the last words to him and to us inclusive these words are also for us: Grace be with thee. My Grace is sufficient for thee, for My strength is made perfect in weakness II Corinthians 12 verse 9
