The Epistle of Paul to the Colossians
This is a verse by verse Commentary
This Epistle to the saints at Colosse is written by the apostle Paul. Probably was this epistle written from Rome in Paul's first prisonship. In Acts 28 verse 30 we read: And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him. The Epistles Ephesians, Philippians and Colossians belong as epistles with each other like a group. The theme or central of all Paul's epistles is Christ and the Church, the Body of Christ which is His Body. The Theme of the epistle to the Colossians is Christ, Which He is now and that He is the Head of the Body and that He is in heaven on the right hand of the Father and the basis is what He had done for us namely His finished Work on the cross!!! What strikes in this epistle is that the apostle Paul had never seen the believers at Colosse. He had never visit them. He only had heard about them and as a result he had written this epistle to them. He had never seen them but he continued to pray and was thankful to God about them. In Colossians 1 verse 3 we read: We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you
The problem with the saints at Colosse was this: under them ruled a Jewish teaching that caused heresy under the believers and this teaching brought them to much ceremonies and and kept them off from Gods Word of Grace and rightly dividing. In Colossians 2 verse 16 we read: Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days. Apparently there were people in the local church who let themselves be dissuaded from Gods Word through human rules and religion. Satan works always in this way. He is very subtle in this and he is a deceiver from the beginning. We too my brothers and sisters have to be aware of his lists and tricks and lies, and not be guided by his lies.
The place Colosse
What kind of place was Colosse? Colosse (Greek) or Colossae Latin was a old city in Phrygie, a part of Asia (now Turkey) This place was 200 kilometres from Ephese and was famous because of the trade in wool. Two cities who were near were Laodicea and Hierapolis.

Colossians Chapter 1 verse 1-3
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God and Timotheus
our brother, To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at
Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the
Lord Jesus Christ. We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, praying always for you.
Verse 1: The apostle Paul named at first his name and he begins this epistle to the Colossian saints. Who was Paul?Answer: Paul was the apostle of Jesus Christ for the Gentiles through God's will. Paul was never one of the 12 apostles as some think. The 12 apostles had been chosen by Jesus Christ when He was on earth. In Acts 7 verse 58 we read for the first time about Saul of Tarsus or Paul. He came from Tarsus and had learned under leading of Gamaliel . Saul was a Pharisee and in I Timothy 1 verse 13 we read: Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. In the epistle to the Philippian saints Paul wrote in Chapter 3 verse 4-6 the following words: Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. i fany other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, i more: Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, and Hebrew of the Hebrews, as touchingh the law, a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. Also in Acts 8 verse 3 we read the following words: And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem......... And in verse 3 we read: As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison. So Saul or Paul was a Jewish man from Tarsen in Cilicia. In Acts 22 verse 3 we read: I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God as ye all are this day. But Paul was also a Roman citizen! In Acts 16 verse 37 and 38 we read: But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? Nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out. And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans" So Paul had two nationalities: Jew and Roman.
By the will of God the apostle Paul became the apostle to the Gentiles with this specific message of Gace Acts 20: 24, 32. God saved Saul of Tarsen on the way to Damascus and by His Grace . Ephesians 2:8-9. From the bitterest enemy on earth , Paul became a servant of Jesus Christ. He became the apostle to the Gentiles. What is a apostle for a person? An apostle is someone who is chosen directly from the Lord with a special message/Gospel. The 12 apostles were chosen on earth for Israel and Paul the only apostle was chosen to be the apostle of the Gentiles because of the fall of Israel Romans 11:11 and 25. Read also Romans 11: 13. Galatians 1: 11-12 and Galatians 2 verse 2!
We read here also about Timothy. Timothy was Paul's son in the Spirit. He was a fellowlaborer and became later the leader of the church at Ephesus. In Acts 16 verses 1-4 we read for the first time about Timotheus.
Verse 2: The apostle Paul writes here to the holy and faithful brethren/believers in Christ who are at Collose. Inclusive he wrote to the whole Body of Christ because we brothers and sisters are today living still under the Dispensation of Gods Grace Ephesians 3: 1-3. It is still Grace and peace which comes from God and not from men because men from nature know not what is peace. God now offers his peace and mercy/grace. How? Through our Lord Jesus Christ. We read II Corinthians 5 verses 19-21: To wit , that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the Word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to god. For he hath made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.
Colossians 1 verse 3
We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ praying always for you.
Verse 3 The apostle Paul was and is really a example for us to follow I Corinthians 4:16. Not only to learn the Gospel but also in prayer: Praying for others he did very often and thanking God. And we should do the same my brothers and sisters! We have free access to God the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ Ephesians 2:18 and it is the will of God that we pray and thank God . Read I Thessalonians 5:16-18 for yourselves!
Colossians 1 verse 4-6
Since we hear of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of
the love which ye have to all the saints, For the
hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof
ye heard before in the Word of the truth of the Gospel
Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and
bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the
day ye heard of it, and knew the Grace of God in truth
Verse 4: In verse 4 and 5 do we find the words: faith, love and hope. From I Corinthians 13:13 we know: And now abideth faith, hope , charity(love), these three; but the greatest of these is charity. From Epaphras Paul heard from their faith in Christ Jesus and the love which the saints at Colosse had to all the saints. First they had trusted Christ for eternal life and second they trusted Him also in daily life. And what they did in the practical way: their love for others. This is what noticed and what was proclaimed of them in the wide world. Paul came to know it from Epaphras verse 7. What kind of love it is what spoken is here? It is the love of God, agape. This is not love of men but love of God. With the love of God it is giving and not expect to receive something back from the other or others. This love is deeper than human love. Human love is self centered. Brothers and sisters: these saints are examples for us also to live like that and to act like them and to trust in God everyday so that He can work in us!
Verse 5: We read in this verse over the hope which was laid for the saints at Colosse in heaven. And which is laid down for us in heaven my dear brothers and sisters. Which hope is this. Philippians 3:20: The new body when we are in heaven litteraly with Christ and be with Him for eternity. Titus 2:13, I Thessalonians 4:13-18, I Corinthians 15: 51-53. With the Rapture of the Body of Christ, the Church my dear brothers and sisters!!! This is our hope and we read this in the epistles of the apostle Paul and not in the rest of the Bible. Through the Gospel of the Grace of God which Paul proclaimed at first to this world. The Gospel of the Grace of God is the truth!!! Read Acts 20:24
Verse 6: This Gospel of Grace of the good news: the finished work on the cross through our Lord Jesus Christ and the preaching of the glory of the cross where He bore our sins on Calvary. It came to them and to this world and this Gospel bringeth forth fruit. It did work in the saints in Colosse and it works also in us my dear brothers and sisters if we believe this Gospel of Grace. I Timothy 2: 3-4 we read: For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth" Dear reader: are you saved? Do you know that you are a sinner and that Christ died for you in your place there on Calvary on the cross? Do you believe that He was buried and rose from the grave I Corinthians 15:3-4? Trust Him before it is to late. Tomorrow can be to late. Do it now before it is to late. You can accept Him right now as Savior of your life on the place where you are! After you accept Him as Savior your life will be changed and you will be a new man in Christ and have eternal life instead of eternal death!
This Gospel of Grace bringeth fruit in lives of people. My dear brothers and sisters learn this Gospel of Grace and begin to study the Epistles of the apostle Paul as the saints at Colosse did and the saints at Philippi did. You won't regret it that you learn this Gospel of Grace Romans 16:25-26.
Colossians 1 verse 7 and 8
As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is
for you a faithful minister of Christ;
Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit
Verse 7: From Epaphras, the saints at Colosse, the brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ had heard Gods Word of Grace Acts 20:32 and Epaphras was a dear fellowservant of Paul. He was also a preacher and from him Paul knew about the brothers and sisters at Collose because Epaphras was one of them.Epaphras was faithful in Christ. In Colossians 4 verse 12 and 13 we read: Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis. These were cities near Colosse in that time and Epaphras had a big zeal for them all, all the saints in the three cities. He was a Bible teacher and bishop/pastor of those cities you can see here. At first they had heard the Good News of Gods Grace through him and how they had to walk according their position in Christ and we my dear brothers learn from the epistles of Paul and can also walk like they walk in that time.
Verse 8: This same man Epaphras had heard that Paul was in prison in Rome and Timotheus was with him and he visit Paul in prison and tells him all of the saints of Colossae and what the good things were and what kind of problems were in the local church. Epaphras declared the love of the saints at Colossae to Paul and Timotheus in prison in Rome. The love in the Spirit. The Spirit of God. The agape, the deep love of Christ and it did work in them! Galatians 5 verse 22 declares us: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. For us brothers and sisters this is really a good example to follow in our lives with our Lord Jesus Christ.
Colossians 1 verse 9 -11
For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease
to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the
knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding
That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being
fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge
of God; Strengthened with all might, according to His glorious
power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness
Verse 9: For this cause: the apostle had heard from these saints at Colosse, the love which they had for their brothers and sisters in Christ and the hope which was in their hearts and was laid up in heaven for them . He began to pray for them and didn't stop to pray for them and Paul desired that they might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spritual understanding. This was not only for them but also for us my dear brothers and sisters who are also in Christ. This is also the will of God to know His will: to be saved and to know the truth: His Good News of Grace Acts 20:32, Romans 16:25-26. The wisdom and spiritual understanding is through His Word, through the Epistles of the apostle Paul. If we study those Epistles and see this as our spiritual food for every day than we become to understand it spiritually and the wisdom we received is from God.
Verse 10: This verse is the continuation of verse 9: That ye might walk worthy of the Lord. This is to walk according Gods Gospel of Grace my dear brothers and sisters. Through this Gospel we learn the will of God now today!! This is not what you heard in this world my dear brothers and sisters. Also not in the so named Christian world. If we began to understand Gods will than we can begin to walk in the Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2 verse 10 tells us the following: For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. In these good works we can walk every day my dear brothers and sisters. It is not our work my dear brothers and sisters. Remember this!
Verse 11: Strengthened with all might! The strength of God, the power of God. What a blessing words here my dear brothers and sisters. It comes from the Greek word dunamis. This is miraculous power! This power comes not from ourselves but from God and from His Word. It is the resurrection power with which we be strengthened! His Word is so powerful. Let us read about this!! Hebrews 4 verse 12: For the Word of god is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. It is according His glorious power which strenghtened us unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness. What a beautiful verse: His resurrection power which will make us stronger every day. We can trust our Lord that He does the Work in us. From ourselves we have no patience and longsuffering but in Christ we have!!! Praise God for this!!!
Colossians 1 verse 12
Giving thanks unto the Father, Which hath made us meet to be
partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light
Verse 12: The apostle Paul thanked God the Father and we too my brothers and sisters can thank God the Father. Why? The answer is that He made us meet to be partakers. From ourselves we aren't. skilled or competent. We come from nature from Adam and are born with the sin nature: we are sinners. Romans 5 verse 12 says us: Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. We inclusive my dear readers! We are from ourselves unable to do anything right. We saved sinners had God meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light. The Lord Jesus Christ died for us on the cross and took our sins upon Himself there on Calvary. We believed that and so God made us meet to be partakers. We inherit something because we are in Christ. As in Ephesians 1 verse 6 : He hath made us accepted in the Beloved One. Meet or fit for God's presence and this is wonderful my dear brothers and sisters! And we have this position in Christ!!!
Colossians 1 verse 13
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated
us into the kingdom of His dear Son:
Verse 13: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness! God Himself hath delivered us from the power of darkness. He hath delivered us from the hands of satan my dear brothers and sisters! Oh how wonderful. In Ephesians 5 verse 8 we read: For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord. And in Ephesians 2 verse 1 we read: And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins. We were in darkness, we were dead in trespasses and sins as other people now in this world who don't believe in our Lord Jesus Christ as personal Savior. We are delivered from the power of darkness and are translated into the kingdom of His dear Son Jesus Christ. God has done this!!!We are now citizens of heaven. We belong to the heavenly kingdom my dear brothers and sisters and we are in Christ!!! How wonderful this is and how great our God is! In Ephesians 2 verse 5 and 6 we read: Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ. And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
Colossians 1 verse 14
In Whom we have redemption through His blood, even
the forgiveness of sins
Verse 14: In Whom, that is in Christ. In Him we have redemption through His blood. Christ had us redeemed. He died in our place on the cross! We should have hung there on Calvary with us all but we couldn't. That's why He without sin died for us sinners! He gave Himself for our sins on the cross and He gave His life for us there. In I Peter 2 verse 24 we read: Who His own self beare our sinss in His own body on the tree, that we, beign dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by Whose stripes ye were healed. That He died for our sins is past time. It is done! In Ephesians 1 verse 7 we read: In Whom (Christ) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His Grace" We have the forgiveness of sins my dear brothers and sisters and that is past, present and future. We have not longer to ask for forgiveness: we are forgiven and we may be thankful for this: we thank God for the forgiveness!!
Colossians 1 verse 15
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of
Verse 15: Christ is the image of the invisible God. He is the firstborn of every creature!!! We cannot see God. God is invisible. Through Christ can we see who is God and what God had done for us in Christ: That He died our death on the cross on calvary, is buried and after 3 days resurrected from the dead I Corinthians 15:3-4. In John 1:10 we read the following verse: He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not" The world in that time He was in the world knew Him not and still my brothers and sisters in Christ: the world still not know Him, the One to Whom the world was made and the One Who bore our sins on Calvary in His body and made it possible for us to have eternal life.
Colossians 1 verse 16
For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and
that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones,
or dominions, or principalities, or powers, all things were created
by Him, and for Him
Verse 16: In Ephesians 3 verse 9 we read: And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, Who created all things by Jesus Christ" And in John 1 verse 3 we read: All things were made by Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made" My dear reader, brother or sister: All is created through Jesus Christ!! God the Creator created/made everything through Him, His Son! In Revelation 4 verse 11 we read: Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created" According His pleasure and will all things are created my dear brothers and sisters!!! To His honour! Let's thank and praise God!
Colossians 1 verse 17
And He is before all things, and by Him all things consists
Verse 17: He is before all things. God is from eternity to eternity! He is before He created the world, the universe, the heavens, everything! God has no begin and no end! He lives because He is a living God from eternity to eternity and Head of eternity. Christ the Son of God the Father is also before all things and by Him all things consists. Even you my dear reader, you are created by Him!!! God created also you! And He came in Christ to this earth to save sinners like you and me my dear reader. He died for you personally on that cross on Calvary, was buried and rose again to give you life, eternal life. Believe this and you will be saved forever!!!!
Colossians 1 verse 18
And He is the head of the body, the Church: Who is the
beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things
He might have the preeminence
Verse 18: He, Christ is the Head of the Body, the Body of Christ. He controls His Body, the Body of Christ, the Heavenly Church. He works through His Body. In Ephesians 1 verse 22 and 23 we read: And hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the Head over all things to the Church, Which is His body, the fulness of Him that filleth all in all. He Christ is the only One Who stood up from the dead with a glorified body. No human being is resurrected yet with a glorified body. Only Christ. Thats why He is the firstborn from the dead and that in all things he might have the preeminence. In verse 15 we read already the following: the firstborn of every creature. He is before the creation of the world and the universe! Through Him every thing is created because He is before the beginning from all creation. What a wonderful God we have my dear brothers and sisters!
Colossians 1 verse 19
For it pleased the Father that in Him should all fulness dwell
Verse 19: It pleased the Father that Him and that is Christ, all the fulness should dwell. In Colossians 2 verse 9 we read: For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Through Christ my dear brothers and sisters and readers we know Who God is. We can read it now through the epistles of the apostle Paul. In Ephesians 3 verse 17-19 we read: That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God
Colossians 1 verse 20
And having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him
to reconcile all things unto Himself; by Him, I say whether they
be things in earth, or things in heaven
Verse 20: God had made peace with this world through the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross. On the cross on Calvary my dear brothers and sisters, my dear readers!!! In 2 Corinthians 5 verse 19 we read the following Word of God: "To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the Word of reconciliation" He gave Himself through His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was/is sacrificed for this world!!! He died for mankind on the cross on Calvary and took all the sins of this world in His body on that cross. He died not His own death, He died in our place my dear readers, brothers and sisters!!! He took the punishment what we deserved my dear readers but we couldn't so He without sin took this punishment and died there on Calvary and was buried and rose from the dead because death couldn't hold Him because He is without sin, yes and died there for you and me personally!!! I Corinthians 15:3-4, Romans 4:25. He is alive because to give you and me a new life in Him, eternal life. Think about this!! Every person in this world has the chance to accept Him as personal Savior. And now it is the time to do it!!! Read II Corinthians 6 verse 1-2!!! If you have not made yet the decission to accept Him as personal Savior do it now reader!! Tomorrow can be to late. Don't put off until tomorrow!!! Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" Acts 16:31.
Colossians 1 verse 21
And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies
in your mind by wicked works, ye now hath he reconciled
Verse 21: And you!!! You my dear brothers and sisters and me were alienated and enemies of God. We were dead in trespasses and sins Wherein in time past we walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. Ephesians 2: 1-2. We before we accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Savior had no hope and were without God in this world!! In Ephesians 2 verse 13 we read: But now in Christ jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. We are now reconciled. We have now peace with God . Dear brothers and sisters: this is Good News, very Good News. We are no more enemies of God, we are His ambassadors, servants of Him. Through His blood we are right with Him, without guilt! God sees us now in His Dear Son Jesus Christ. We are now in Him! Read Galatians 2:20. And this is our hope now: Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him"Romans 5 verse 9.
Colossians 1 verse 22
In the body of His flesh through death, to present
you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in His sight
Verse 22: We were the enemies of God because we were in our sins. We were under the power of death. But now in Christ we read in Ephesians 2 verse 1 the Good News: And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins. What a Good News! Reconciled through the death of Christ on the cross. He died in our place on that cross on Calvary. Dear readers: to meet God is always the cross: this is the meetingplace. What we never could do He did. He without sin could die for sinners like you and me and that He has done with the purpose that now in Christ we are holy and unblameable and unreproveable in His sight. I Peter 3 verse 18 tells us: For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit"
Colossians 1 verse 23
If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be
not moved away from the hope of the Gospel, which ye
have heard and which was preached to every creature
which is under heaven: whereof I Paul am made a minister
Verse 23: And now the daily practice. We are saved and have eternal life in Christ. This can't be taken from us. For eternity we are saved, saved in Christ. This verse is a call to us for daily life. We have to continue with the Gospel of the Grace of God and if we do that we are grounded in the faith and settled and not moved away like many people are tossed and fro with every wind of teaching. Through the Gospel of the Grace of God we stay fast and are notmoved back and forth. Read Romans 16:25 and 26. This gospel is preached to every creature the apostle Paul says here which is under heaven. Colossians 1 verse 5 and 6 tells us: For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the Word of the truth of the Gospel. Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the Grace of God in truth. The apostle Paul was the first one who proclaimed this Gospel of Grace to this world. Through the epistles we can learn this Gospel of the Grace of God. Dear reader, brother and sister: Get to know this wonderful Gospel of the Grace of God! This Gospel saves you from false doctrines and build you up and you will be strong in our Lord Jesus Christ and know also how to fight daily against our enemy that is the devil Ephesians 6 verse 10-18. Paul was the minister of this Gospel, He at first made known it to this world!
Colossians 1 verse 24
Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is
behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for His Body's sake
which is the Church
Verse 24: Paul had to suffer a lot for the Gospel of the Grace of God. As a servant for Jesus Christ suffered he more than any of us. Read II Corinthians 11: 22-33. A example of suffering of Paul is in Acts 16 verse 22 and 23: And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely. What the apostle Paul proclaimed namely the Gospel of Gods Grace. For that he had to suffer so much because he was the first one in the Body of Christ, the Church. This was foretold by our Lord Jesus Christ. In Acts 9 verse 15 and 16 we read: But the Lord said unto him, God thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear My Name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for My Name's sake. Paul is our prototype of suffering for the Church, the Body of Christ. At the end of his life Paul was beheaded for the Gospel of Gods Grace which he made known to this world. In Philippians 4 verse 4 we read: Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say Rejoice. How can you in such circumstances in which he was rejoice in the Lord? The answer is the hope what we have my dear brothers and sisters. Philippians 3: 20 and 21: For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself. This was Paul's future and is it is ours too my dear brothers and sisters! Read also Romans 8 verse 18
Colossians 1 verse 25
Whereof I am made a minister, according to the Dispensation
of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the Word of God
Verse 25: The apostle Paul was a servant or minister through our Lord Jesus Christ Who had given him the Dispensation of the Grace of God. In Ephesians 3 verse 1-3 we read: For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the Dispensation of the Grace of God which is given me to you ward: How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words) He , Paul was the steward and was the first one who told people about this Dispensation of Grace under which we still live! And not only the Dispensation of the Grace of God Paul had to proclaim as steward , as minister, as servant from Jesus Christ also something else what we read here: to fulfil the Word of God. To complete the Word of God. Now we have the whole Bible, the Word of God and Paul was the last one to complete the Word of God! Everything from Genesis -Revelation is written in the Bible. God reveals nothing now anymore. Nothing can be added to God's Word. If people think they got a message or a revelation or a dream from God directly this cannot be because His Word is complete. So what we have to do as members of the Body of Christ is this: to read and study God's Word and the result is faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17
Colossians 1 verse 26
Even the Mystery which hath been hid from ages and from
generations, but now is made manifest to His saints
Verse 26: The mystery which hath been hid fom ages and grom generations! This Mystery the apostle Paul made known to this world. This Mystery was hid from ages. You cannot find the Mystery in the books who are not written by Paul. Through him it was made known. In Greek it said: apokaluptu=to reveal. In Ephesians 3 verse 8 and 9 we read: Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, Who created all things by Jesus Christ. Through the epistles of the apostle Paul we too can know this mystery which he preached and to read and study all his epistles we are obedient to God. Read Romans 16:25 and 26. To ignore or refuse the epistles of the apostle Paul your life as a believer in God is not stable and it has also consequences for the future!!!
Colossians 1 verse 27
To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of
this Mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope
Verse 27: To whom, that are God's saints! God would make known His riches of the glory of this Mystery to all the saints! Who are the saints? These were the brothers in the first place at Colosse and all the members of the Body of Christ. Also us and we live 2000 years later but still we have the Dispensation of the Grace of God under which we still live. In Christ is all the riches/wealth and glory! Christ made the way open to God which was closed because of the fall of men in. Read Genesis 3, Romans 5:12! In I Timothy 1 verse 1 we read: Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ Which is our hope" Why is Christ our Hope? Answer: He took all our sins upon Himself on the cross on Calvary. He died in our place on that cross. He died not only. After 3 days He stood up from the dead. Let us read I Corinthians 15 verse 3 and 4: For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures: And that he was buried, and that He rose again the third day according the Scriptures" He lives, yes He lives my brothers and sisters, my dear readers!!! And has given us a new life in Him and shall also us redeem from the wrath to come which will come upon this world in the future.Read all the Scriptures: I Thessalonians 1:10, I Thessalonians 4: 13-18, Titus 2:13, Philippians 3: 20-21. Dear brothers and sisters. To read all those scriptures you can understand that Christ is our eternal and only Hope!
Colossians 1 verse 28
Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching
every man in all wisdom; that we may present
every man perfect in Christ Jesus
Verse 28: The apostle Paul and his co workers like Timothy , Epaphras preached our Lord Jesus Christ because He is the only Hope my brothers and sisters. This is still so for us my dear saints. We live 2000 years later but are also member of the Body of Christ, the Heavenly Church! Everywhere the apostle Paul came he preached the Lord Jesus Christ. He warned every man, teached every man in all wisdom. Which wisdom? The wisdom of God which is in Christ Who was crucified for us, buried and was resurrected to give us life, eternal life! The Gospel of Gods Grace Acts 20:24. The reason for this was that every man may present perfect in Christ Jesus! Perfect not only in position but also in walk, daily life!!! Romans 16:25-26 The message the apostle Paul preached! You can learn this Gospel and to learn and study the epistles of the apostle Paul is to obey God. There is no other Gospel my dear reader, brother and sister!! Galatians 1:6-7. Through this Gospel we read in Colossians 2 verse 6 and 7: As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him: Rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving
Colossians 1 verse 29
Whereunto I also labour, striving according to His
working, which worketh in me mightily
Verse 29: The apostle Paul worked very hard in preaching Christ, warn every man, teaching every man in all wisdom. Where he get all the power from? Paul worked according to Christ ressurection power. That was the power, the working in him. As Paul we are identified with Christ and also God's resurrection power lives also in us. He works in us too just as He worked in Paul the apostle mightily. In those days the apostle Paul lived it was very difficult time. He suffered so much for his Lord Jesus Christ. He was the first one in the Heavenly church, the Body of Christ and at first he told everything he knew from the risen Lord: the whole Mystery! Through all the difficulties and sufferings Christ worketh mightily in him! This is the power of His resurrection and this can also work in us my dear brothers and sisters if we are open for this! Read Philippians 2 verse 13!
Colossians Chapter 2
Colossians 2 verses 1-3
For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you,
and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen
my face in the flesh. That their hearts might be comforted, being
knit together in loove, and unto all riches of the full assurance
of understanding to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God,
and of the Father, and of Christ; In Whom are hid all the treasures
of wisdom and knowledge
Verse 1: The apostle Paul had a great conflict for the saints at Colosse and also for the ones who were in Laodicea. Paul had a hard spiritual warfare and there was a lot of opposition in that time. The Gospel of the Grace of God was new and people from nature doesn't like that to have something new. The Gospel of the Grace of God in general was not believed in Paul's time on earth as it is today, because today most people don't like the Grace of God. Most people in general does not believe in Gods Grace and not at all Gods Gospel of Grace! Although the apostle Paul hadn't met the saints at Colosse or in Laodicea he had heard about them through Epaphras who had told him everything when the apostle Paul was in prison. Epaphras had been looking for him in prison and told him about the saints in Colosse, Laodicea. Probably Epaphras was their leader and Bible teacher. In Philippians 1 verse 29 and 30 we read: For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on Hm, but also to suffer for His sake. Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me" The conflict the apostle Paul he had for the saints at Colosse and in Laodicea was that they went not to wrong teachings, human teachings, philosofy. The conflict was not with flesh and blood but against the devil with all his lies. In I Timothy 1 verse 15 we read: This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. What we read my dear brohers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ it still works today like this. People listen more to false doctrines from the devil instead of getting to know the truth Colossians 1:5-6. So there is nothing new under the Sun.
Verse 2: The apostle Paul had a great conflict for the saints there in Asia. There were a lot of people who resists the truth as it is today and didn't believe the Gospel of the Grace of God which Paul preached and proclaimed. This was the reason that the apostle Paul says here in that their hearts might be comforted. How? Through Gods Word of Grace Acts 20:32. Being knit together in love. Which love is Paul speaking about? The love of God and that is agape! This is the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Him is all the riches and full assurance and understanding. In Him we have all the riches and let this penetrate to your heart my dear brotther and sisters! Make it your own! To the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father and of Christ. This is what Paul proclaimed: the Mystery of God which was hid in God before the world began and for the first place was revealed to Paul and through him we can learn this Mystery. It is the glory of the cross my dear brothers and sisters: What God in Christ had done for us on that cross on Calvary. That man can be saved by Grace by faith in Christ alone Ephesians 2:8-9. My dear brothers and sisters Gods will is that you will learn also this Mystery which is the truth! Read I Timothy 2:3-4. It is the preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began. Romans 16:25. Lean this my dear brothers and sisters and be not unwise of yourselves but listen to God through His Word of Grace Acts 20:32.
Verse 3: In Whom this is Christ are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (epignosis). In I Corinthians 2 verse 7 and 8 we read the following verses: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, whcih God ordained befroe the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of the world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory" And in I Corinthians 1 verse 24 we read: But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, (we preach) Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. God's wisdom is in Christ my dear reader and this much wiser than human wisdom. In Him we have as believers all things. This is a very delightful position in Him! We are blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ. Read Ephesians 1:3!
Colossians 2 verse 4
And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words
Verse 4: The problem with the saints at Colosse was that some of them were beguiled with enticing words of men, philosophies of men and meanings of people. This is always a great danger wherein our adversary have a big role in it. Today we have the same problems and it does not matter if we live now 2000 years later than the apostle Paul, we still live in this sin world with all the theories of men. In Ephesians 5 verse 6-8 we read: Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light" Not for nothing the apostle Paul warned them and also us for this and admonishes us that we are aware about it and that we are no partaker with such people. In Colossians 2 verse 18 (later in this chapter) we read: Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind. The Dispensation of Grace under which we live as members of the Body of Christ is signless my dear brothers and sisters. We have to hold the sound Doctrine: The Gospel of the Grace of God and and don't deviate from it!
Colossians 2 verse 5
For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit
joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith
Verse 5: When the apostle Paul wrote this epistle to the saints at Colosse het was absent from them in the flesh but not in the spirit. He never had met the saints at Colosse. From Epaphras who was one of them and a beloved brother in Christ he had heard from their faith in Christ Jesus and the love (agape) they had to other people. This is also my experience with other brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ who I have never met like my brothers and sisters in the local church in St Louis USA. Through internet I have contact with them by facebook or other mediums. It looks like you know each other for a long time. The apostle Paul had a great joy over the saints in Colosse because of their stedfastness of their faith in Christ. In I Corinthians 15 verse 1 and 2 we read: Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the Gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you unless ye have believed in vain. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ: Gods Grace and the Gospel of Gods Grace build you up as believer in Christ and if you stand for it , it gives you stedfastness in the faith in Christ like the saints in Colosse! Read the epistles of the apostle Paul Romans -Philemon. This is our daily spiritual food! To accept this Gospel of Gods Grace and stand for it you will be in obedience of God today Romans 16:25-26.
Colossians 2 verse 6
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus
the Lord, so walk ye in Him
Verse 6: A person believes in the finished Work of the Lord Jesus Christ. He received the Lord Jesus Christ. We as persons believed in the past in the finished Work of Christ and we are now in Him. First it is believe what Christ had done for you and me on the cross: that He forgave all our sins on the cross because He bear all our sins in His own body for us on Calvary on that cross. Now after that the walk: so walk ye in Him! How do we know how we must walk in Him? By God's Grace we are saved Ephesians 2 verse 8 and 9. Through the Gospelf of Gods Grace people get saved and God wants us to walk in Christ. That walk is daily my dear brothers and sisters! This Gospel of Grace builds us up and let us see what we have in Christ and how we have to walk in Him. Another Gospel there is not Galatians 1: 6-9 and a mix what it is in the Christian world may not stable us and through that we cannot walk and it doesn's build us up. As believers than we are tossed and fro with every wind of teaching.
Colossians 2 verse 7
Rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith,
as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving
Verse 7: Rooted and built up in Him. Brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ: we are believers in Him and are blessed with all blessings Ephesians 1:3. Now God wants us to be rooted and built up in Him, in Christ. How can this be? In the mixed or another Gospel in this world you cannot be but through the Gospel of the Grace of God we can! Yes we can be built up in Him if we know what is our position in Him, what has He done for us and we know this only through the Gospel of Gods Grace!!! So brothers and sisters maybe you are in a local church and you heard a mixed Gospel all your life and think that this is not the truth because you recognize that you are not rooted and built up why not to learn the Gospel of the Grace of God which is the truth!!!? Colossians 1:5-6 and Romans 16 verse 25 and 26. God's will is written in His Word the Bible my dear brothers and sisters and that is: Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth!! To the knowledge of the truth my dear brother and sister, reader!!! The Saints at Colosse had heard the Gospel of the Grace of God through Epaphras and other brethren. In daily life they had also to thank God for which they had received from Him and we too have to do that my dear brothers and sisters. Ephesians 3 verses 16-19 are also important for us: That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love. May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Colossians 2 verse 8
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosphy and vain deceit,
after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world,
and not after Christ
Verse 8: The problem of the saints at Colosse was that they were easily seduced to philosophies and teaqchings of men or traditions of men. They didn't let themselves through God's Word of Grace Acts 20:32. We live my dear brothers and sisters 2000 years later but we all are inclined to go with this world with his philosophies and tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world and not after Christ. It brings us to error and this likes the enemy of God namely satan and his hosts. What Paul wrote here to the saints at Colosse is still actual. What we have to do is this: Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause devisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them Romans 16 verse 17. So lest no man spoil us through his philosophy or tradition. Let us be strong in God's Grace and the Gospel of Gods Grace Romans 16: 25-26
Colossians 2 verse 9
For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily
Verse 9: In Him, in Christ dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Christ is the image of the unseen God we serve. He came to this earth to save sinners like you and me. He died on the cross on Calvary for our sins, was buried and stood up from the grave I Corinthians 15: 3 and 4, Romans 4:25. He lives and through Him we are right in the eyes of God and rightoues. Read also 2 Corinthians 5: 19-21
Colossians 2 verse 10
And ye are complete in Him, which is the
Head of all principality and power.
Verse 10: We as believers in Christ my dear brothers and sisters are complete in Him, in Christ!!! What does it mean? We are in God's eyes perfect in Christ and good. He sees us in Christ as perfect and good: complete. Without guilt because our sins are forgiven through Christ's blood shed for us on Calvary on that cross. Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:14, Romans 5:8. Christ is also the Head of all principality and power. He is also the Head of the Body of Christ!!! Let us read Ephesians 1 verse 20-23: Which He wrought in Christ when He raised Hm from the dead and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come; And hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the Head over all things to the Church , Which is His body, the fulness of Him that filleth all in all. What can i have als man more than this what I already have in Christ? Nothing more! We have as believers in Him the most highest position! Thank God for this!!!
Colossians 2 verse 11
In Whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made
without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh
by the circumcision of Christ
Verse 11: In this verse the apostle Paul let us know the deep meaning of the cross, our identification with our Lord Jesus Christ as believers in Him. We are circumcised in Him, in Christ. This is not the circumcision what Israel had to do under the Law. Read Romans 4 verse 11. God gave this as a sign to Abraham. We as believers in Christ my dear brothers and sisters are spiritual circumcised. Circumcision without hands. Circumcised in Him. This is our identification with Him. Our old man is crucified with Him on that cross on Calvary, is buried in the grave and we are resurrected with Him from the grave. We are now new men in Him. He sees us now in Christ without faults and perfect, complete. We are saved sinners my dear brothers and sisters and have a new life, eternal life in Him. Circumcised in Him: it is made without hands; not by the power of any creature but by the power of the blessed Spirit of God. The Jews thought themselves complete in the ceremonial law but we my dear brothers ands sisters are complete in Christ! Through the operation of God. This is great my dear brothers and sisters and think this over and over again!!!
Colossians 2 verse 12
Buried with Him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with Him
through the faith of the operation of God, Who hath raised
Him from the dead
Verse 12: Buried with Him, that is in Christ. This happened on the cross my dear brothers and sisters! Burtied with Him in baptism. The old man is with Him buried in baptism in His death! This all happened on the cross on Calvary! Waterbaptism what is been practized in this world can't possibly be a funeral with Christ. Also not symbolic! Waterbaptism will not change you my dear brothers and sisters! We are new men in Christ and this is a fact if you believe it or not it remains a fact! In Romans 6 verse 1-4 we read: What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that Grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life" Brothers and sisters: we are identified with Him: we died with Him on that cross on Calvary, our old man is buried with Him in the grave and we are resurrected with Him! We are now alive in Him!!! Read Ephesians 2:1-10, Romans 6 verse 8-9! Think about this and praise God for this operation what He has accomplished!!!
Colossians 2 verse 13
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision
of your flesh, hath He quickened together with Him,
having forgiven you all trespasses
Verse 13: We were spiritual dead through the fall of Adam our ancestor Romans 5:12. We were in our sins and in the uncircumcision of our flesh! Ephesians 2:1-3! Verse 1 tells us: And you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins. All our sins are forgiven by His blood shed for us on Calvary on the cross. Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:14. He died our death on that cross because He was and is the only One who could do this because He was and is without sin, He righteous for us unrighteous people of the world! In the practice of our daily life we have to ask anymore for forgiveness but thank God for the forgiveness of sins through His blood! And we live now in Christ without the power of sin that was over us when we were in trespasses and sins. Thank God for His Grace in Christ Jesus Read Ephesians 2:8-9!
Colossians 2 verse 14
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was
against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out
of the way, nailing it to His cross
Verse 14: The handwriting of ordinances which was against us. What for handwriting the apostle Paul is talking about here? What was against us? The Law my dear brothers and sisters. The Law with all the rules which was given first to Israel and indirect against us too was against us. The Law had ordinances and much rules (613 rules). In Galatians 3 verse 19 we read why the Law was given: Wherefore than serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a Mediator" In the same chapter we read in verse 24: Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith" In Romans 3 verse 19 and 20 we see: Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin"
Dear brothers ans sisters, readers: Through the law nobody could be justified. What did God to justify people like you and me? God came through Christ in this world to save sinners like you and me and to free people from the law. On that cross on Calvary where He died our sins He nailed the law on that cross too!! In Romans 10 verse 4 we read: For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every that believeth" Dear brothers and sisters: this is done on the cross on Calvary!!! In Galatians 3 verse 13 we read: Christ had redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree" In Galatians 3 verse 25 and 26 we read: But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. for ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. The law He nailed it to the tree, to the cross my dear brothers and sisters. We are no longer under the law of ordinances, we are under Gods Grace! How wonderful position we have and this we got free from God through Christ Jesus!!! Through Christ faith we are saved by His Grace Ephesians 2:8 and 9 and that not ourselves. Thank God for this everyday!!!
Colossians 2 verse 15
And having spoiled principalities and powers, He made
a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it
Verse 15: The principalities and powers. Who are they. Are these the governments we have in our countries? No the principalities and powers are satan and his hosts. Satan thought when he crucified our Lord on the cross that he had won but but the opposite was true: Christ stood up from the grave because death couldn't hold Him because He is without sin and He made a shew of them openly. He triumphed over them. Jesus Christ is the Victor. Satan no longer has the power over death. In Hebrews 2 verse 14 and 15 we read the beautiful word of God: Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Praise God for His triumph over satan through Christ!!!
Colossians 2 verse 16
Let no man therefore judge you in meat,
or in drink, or in respect of an holyday,
or of the new moon, or of the sabbath day
Verse 16: And now the daily life, our walk in Christ my dear brothers and sisters. We have seen what Christ has done for us and this can effect us in our daily life and we begin here that no one, no person can judge us in meat or in drink or in an holy day or of the new moon or of the sabbath day. You can fill in more things as believers. Everyone of us is for him or herself responsible in our walk in Christ and we have to lead ourselves through God's Word of Grace and the Word of truth rightly dividing 2 Timothy 2:15 and Acts 20:32. We have now the freedom in Christ. This will not say my brothers and sisters that we can do now everything. In I Corinthians 10 verse 23 we read the following verse: All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. For example feastdays. In the past you had the Jewish feastdays and now we some Christian feastdays or Sundays. Everyone of us is free to hold on such a day or not. Romans 14 verse 5 and 6 tells us the following: One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unt the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. he that eateth, eateth to the Lord, fo rhe giveth God thanks; and he taht eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. We have the freedom my dear brothers and sisters and listen don't let yourself dominate by another person! We are not under the Law but under God's Grace!
Colossians 2 verse 17
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the
body is of Christ
Verse 17: Jewish feasts, Sabbath days, new moon to hold them were all shadows which came later. Now we are in Christ and there is freedom in Him and Christ has the Law nailed to the cross. There is no need to hold fast the Sabbath days, the new moon, the Jewish feastdays. Christ is the Image now!!! All those feastdays, Sabbath days was for Israel but now my dear brothers and sisters God is not dealing with Israel on this moment. No He is dealing with you and me individually as members of the Body of Christ and Jesus Christ is the Head of that Body to which we are part off. I Corinthians 12 verse 13 and 14 and 27
Colossians 2 vers 18
Let no man bequile you of your reward
in a voluntary humility and worshipping
of angels, intruding into those things which
he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by hsi
Verse 18: This is at first written to the saints at Colosse and it is also for us because it is nowadays also actual. We don't belong to be dominated by another person's will like worshipping other gods or angels. The apostle Paul is speaking here of a person who says he had seen angel or angels van visions. It looks like when they tell others like you and me that this reality but it isn't my dear brothers ans sisters. God reveales nowadays nothing under this Dispensation of Grace. The last vision or sight ever seen by man was Paul when the man said to him Paul come over and help us. That the Gospel came also in Europe Acts 16 verse 9. Those so named dreams, visions or sights now come not from God but from men's inner heart. So don't get carried away such false things. In Romans 10 verse 17 we read: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Dear readers, brothers and sisters: the devil are behind such so named dreams to hold people away from God's Word. II Corinthians 11 verse 14. God is now not working with sights, visions because we live under an different Dispensation of Grace and God is not busy with wonders and signs, dreams and visions. This was under the former Dispensation when He was dealing with Israel. The Jews require signs! In I Timothy 4 verse 1 we read: Now the Spirit speaketh expressly6, taht in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. This is what we see in this world: Departing from the faith in Christ, depart from God's Gospel of Grace!! Let us who know the truth under us to be careful with other people!!!
Colossians 2 verse 19
And not holding the Head, from which all the body
by joints and bands having nourishment ministered,
and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God
Verse 19: Some of the saints at Colosse had been guided by wrong teachings from men and seducing spirits: teachings of the devil. The ones who told them this hold not the Head, Christ. Every believer in Christ should know that Christ is the Head of the Church and we are the members of the Church namely the Body of Christ. We have to lead ourselves by Him and by His Word Romans 10:17. And hold fast the sound doctrine which saves us from false doctrines and not been guided like some saints at Colosse who did this. Read Romans 16 verses 25-26 and II Timothy 2:15. To obey the Gospel of the Grace of God and hold fast this only sound doctrine makes us stronger in the faith of Christ and we will grow in the spiritual life.
Colossians 2 verse 20
Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments
of the world, why, as though living in the world,
are ye subject to ordinances.
Verse 20: The apostle Paul is asking them, the saints at Colosse and also indirect us if we be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world why are you guided by the ordinances of this world and be subject to ordinances (rules). In Galatians 5 verse 24: And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. This is done on the cross: our old man died with Christ on that cross and was buried in the grave. We have not to lead ourselves to ordinances of men. We are citizens of heaven on this earth my dear brothers and sisters so let us hold fast on God's Grace and the Gospel of Gods Grace, the sound doctrine we have to set our affection on things above and not on things on the earth Colossians 3:2. Not going back to the former state what we see in the unbelievers/religious people my dear brothers and sisters!
Colossians 2 verse 21
Touch not; taste not; handle not
Verse 21: 3 things here: Touch not, taste not and handle not. 3 things you must not do! All rules of men. Dear brothers and sisters: we are free from the Law! Galatians 5 verse 1 tells us: Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. We are free in Christ in our spiritual life so we are not to go back to any law of men which said touch not, taste not and handle not.
Colossians 2 verse 22
Which al are to perish with the using; after the
commandments and doctrines of men?
Verse 22: All those rules are imported from people. In the days of the apostle Paul men tried impose rules on others. This is what happened in Colosse and nowadays you have the same. Men is not changed in mind. Men from nature is the same today and religious. In some religious places (Christian places) you cannot buy for example food from the supermarket and if you wash your car people look at you weird and maybe speak shame about it. But also in other religions you have a lot of rules. In Romans 14 verse 5 we read: One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. Let us give each other freedom in this my dear brothers and sisters!
Colossians 2 verse 23
Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship,
and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour
to the satisfying of the flesh.
Verse 23: Those rules and commandments of men look like they are really devout but the opposite is true because with those commandments and rules men is to sattisfy is own flesh and this is not serving God. It has nothing to do with the relationship with God. We have the freedom in Christ and His mind and we have not a Spirit of fear. Read 2 Timothy 1:7. Let us be not overruled by men's commandments and rules but serve the Lord according God's Word of Grace Acts 20:32.
Colossians 3 verse 1
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above,
where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Verse 1: From this verse on in this Chapter we read about our daily life with God: the practice my dear brothers and sisters! We you and me my brother and sister are risen with Christ. We are in Him and where is Christ now? Yes Christ sitteth on the right hand of God: Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every Name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come Ephesians 1: 21 We were from nature dead in our trespasses and sins Ephesians 2: 1 and death worketh in us physically II Corinthians 4 verse 12. If we then be risen with Christ and we are in Christ we have to seek those things which are above. How to do this you have to ask yourself. Prayerfully spend more time with this blessed Book the Bible. We , our old man died with Him on that cross on Calvary, we were buried with Him in the grave and our Old man was buried there. Christ resurrected from the dead and we with Him. This is our identification with Him. In general we fulfil not the lusts of our flesh but we are serving God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We are now risen with Him! We have eternal life in Him. Let us study His Word and special the epistles of the apostle Paul Romans till the end of Philemon. Acts 20:32: And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the Word of His Grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you and inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Colossians 3 verse 2
Set your affection on things above, not on things
on the earth.
Verse 2: In general we look more to the things here on earth then to the eternal future and eternal life in Christ! Why is this. One of the reasons could be that we don't comprehend which God in Christ has given us. And to make it our own when we understand it. The apostle Paul admonishes us that we have to do this: affection on things above and not on things on the earth. We are in Him and risen with Christ, this is a fact my dear brothers and sisters. The life here on earth is temporary but to be with Him is eternal. We have to make it our own our position in Christ.
Colossians 3 verse 3
For ye are dead, and your life is hid
with Christ in God
Verse 3: We are dead. What is dead? Our old man is dead and in the grave. He , the old man died with Christ on that cross! We have a new life my dear brothers and sister and our life is now hid with Christ in God!!! This is Great and Good News for everyday my brother and sister!!! Realize this and meditate on this verse!!! This is our position: in Christ. In Galatians 2 verse 20 we read: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live: yet not I, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh i live by the faith of the Son of God, Who loved me, and gave Himself for me" Our lives are hid with Christ in God. We are safe in God through Christ!
Colossians 3 verse 4
When Christ, Who is our life, shall appear, then
shall ye also appear with Him in glory
Verse 4: When Christ shall appear! When will this be? This will be on the moment of the Rapture when we are caught up in heaven and in heaven we will meet Him, Who is our Life. This will be a wonderful moment! In I Corinthians 15 verse 51-52 we read the following: Behold I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. Christ is our life my brothers and sisters! See Galatians 2:20 and in Philippians 3 verse 20-21 we read that our walk is in heaven from whence we also look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto Himself. This is the glory which is spoken here: a new body what we will receive at that moment and then we cannot sin anymore. It will be a spiritual body. Thank God for this and we have this very good hope as members of the Body of Christ, the Church. This will motivate us to walk more and more according our position in Christ now!!
Colossians 3 verse 5
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth:
fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil
concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry
Verse 5 : Our hope is firm! It is now what do we do here on this earth in daily life. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit Ephesians 1:13-14 and God's Spirit lives in us. To what extent do we let God's Spirit work in us? It is we who make the decision. It goes along with our own will. Let's work God's Spirit in us? What goes with Gods Word. Romans 10:17
We have to lead us by God's Spirit in our daily life and mortify the members (of the old nature) upon this earth with the power of His resurrection which is fornication, uncleanness, inordinatre affection, evil concupiscence, covetousness which is idolatry. The saints at Colosse had a lot of trouble with this and we sometimes also my dear brothers and sisters. That's why the apostle Paul admonishes us here in this verse. The first is fornication. It comes from the Greek word porneia what is translated in pornography: lust to other women. This can lead to slavery of this, if we give in. We are no better than some in the Corinthian church or in other churches which had this same problem in the local church. Still we have this sin nature and the presence of sin because we live here on earth. In I Thessalonians 4 verse 3, 4 and 5 we read: For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication; That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God. In Ephesians 5 verse 3 we have a nother verse: But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you as becometh saints. Dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ: we are new men in Christ. Let us flee from this! It is very important that in daily life we shouldn't give in
Let's not let this control us and let us pray that God will help us to resist this!
Colossians 3 verse 6
For which things sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of
Verse 6 God's wrath comes over this and the children of disobedience do those things and have no control on it because they cannot choose. They serve sin, their own flesh .In Ephesians 5 verse 6 and 7 we read: Let no man deceive you with vain words; for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For sure we live in this world and daily we have to do with unbelievers around us but let us not be partaker with them. With other words do what they do. This will not say you cannot talk with them but keep unbelievers also on a distance. If they curse or drink to much or do other things of the flesh you have not to do the same as believer in Christ.
Colossians 3 verse 7
In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them
Verse 7: Before we knew the Lord Jesus Christ in our lives as our Redeemer for eternity did we live and walked in this broken world. We were unbelievers and the power of sin was over us. We walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. Ephesians 2 verse 2. In Romans 6 verse 20 and 21 do we read: For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. Afterwards we can say that we are in shame for what we have done in the time we didn't believe. We did the same as the apostle Paul before he was called by our Lord Jesus Christ from heaven on the road to Damascus. Titus 3 verse 3 tells us: For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. We were like this my dear brothers and sisters!!! Before we were in Christ. We are now in Christ and by God's Grace through faith. Let us for sure mortify all those things from the flesh and let us focus on Christ and Gods Word of Grace Acts 20:32!!
Colossians 3 verse 8
But now ye also put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy,
filthy communication out of your mouth
Verse 8: My brothers and sisters: We are in Christ and because we are in Him we have to put off things which is sin and had to do with out flesh and fleshly thinking and doing. What are these things of the flesh we read here? This are anger= an emotion characterized toward someone or something you feel has deliberately done you wrong. Wrath is anger. Malice =hate, blashemy s the act of showing contempt, insulting, or expressing a lack of reverence for God, filthy communication out of your mouth: dirty communication like foul language. We can stop this with the help of God's Spirit Who lives in us In Ephesians 4 verse 21 and 22 we read: If so be that ye have heard Him, and have been taught by Him as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts. Brothers and sisters: we have to do this: to put off the old man everyday as long we are on earth here!!!
Colossians 3 verse 9
Lie not one to another, seeing that
ye have put off the old man with his deeds.
Verse 9: Lie not against each other. In Ephesians 4 verse 25 we read: Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with is neighbour: for we are members one of another. Is the apostle Paul speaking of believers and unbelievers and how the believers must do to the unbelievers? I don't think so. I think he Paul is speaking about how we as members of the Body of Christ, the Church interact with each other. Let us not lie against another brother or sister because we have to put off the old man with his deeds in the daily life. Sometimes this is very difficult because we have to do daily with our own flesh and fleshly minds and sin and the nature of sin. We have not only to know that our old man is crucified with Him and buried with Him in the grave. We have to leave the old man in the grave and pick not up this again.
Colossians 3 verse 10
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge
after the image of Him that created him
Verse 10: We have put on the new man. We are new man in Christ. If we been lead through Gods Word of Grace and rightly dividing the Word of truth than we are renewed day by day through God's Grace which is His knowledge. God created the new man in Christ in His Image He created him, in Christ. This is great my dear brothers and sisters. Read also Romans 6 verse 4 and II Corinthians 5:17!
Colossians 3 verse 11
Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision,
Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all
Verse 11: In Christ there is no difference between Jew or Greek, circumcised or not. For God there is no difference. God sees the heart and not where you come from under this Dispensation of Grace whereunder we live now for 2000 years. In Ephesians 2 verse 14 and 15 we read: For He is our peace, Who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us. Having abolished in His flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in Himself of twain one new man, so making peace" This is done on the cross my dear brothers and sisters. You don't find that in the four Gospels or in other books of the Bible except the epistles of the apostle Paul and exactly here in Ephesians. On the cross the wall what was between Jew and Greek Christ broke that wall of partition and nailed it to the cross. The way to God is now open through Christ my dear brothers and sisters and dear readers!!! Christ is all and in all! How? Through His Spirit Ephesians 1:13-14 and Ephesians 4:30 whereby we are sealed to the Day of redemption (Rapture)
Colossians 3 verse 12
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind
Verse 12: We, my dear brothers and sisters are elected by God Ephesians 1:4: According as he hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love. In daily life we to put on the new man, as the elect of God to walk according His will. You may ask what is walking according Gods will? It is what the Scripture here says to us as holy and beloved: bowels of mercies: Innate compassion= natural and this is according our new nature we have. Kindness: friendly, humbleness of mind= to abase the pride or arrogance, meekness= patience and longsuffering= long patience. If we been lead by Gods Spirit then the Spirit is working in us and through this Spirit all the above will come out. We have in Galatians 5 verse 22 the following verse: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law" Then we are no lead by our flesh and serve sin but are lead by God's Spirit through Gods Word of Grace.
Colossians 3 verse 13
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man
have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye
Verse 13: In the Body of Christ we as members have to forbeare and to forgive one another! This is love, the love of God in Christ. Christ on the cross paid all our sins because He died our death there and through His blood we have forgiveness Colossians 1:14: In Whom we have redemption through His blood, even te forgiveness of sins. In Ephesians 4 verse 32 we read : And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. This is what we have to do but first to forbeare each other and sure in the Body of Christ. We can also forgive than other people outside who does not know God in their lives. It has to do my dear brothers and sisters with patience and from ourselves we dont have this patience but through God's resurrection power in Christ we can do this. To otherr people, no matter who they are, brothers and sisters we have to be patient, good, mercy and meek. So let the Spirit of God rule us every day through His Word my dear brothers and sisters.
Colossians 3 verse 14
And above all these things put on charity, which is
the bond of perfectness
Verse 14: Above all these things! The things before written see verse 13. Above all these things we are exhorted by the apostle Paul, by God to put on charity. Of which charity is spoken here? Is this human love? No not at all. Human love cannot lead to the bond of perfectness. Human love is from the nature of men and is self centered, egoistic. The charity which is here spoken of and that we have put on is God's love. Because God is love!!! Let us read I Corinthians 13 verses 3-5: And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind, charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up. Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil" This is what in this verse is spoken my dear brothers and sisters. But you may say how do we do that? Well this is to let yourself lead by God's Spirit. We are sealed by His Spirit. God's Spirit lives in us my dear brothers and sisters. Through His Spirit we can read His Word the Bible and we can make the Word of God our own! Romans 10:17. Through His Word we learn now what is God's charity and we have to put on this which is the bond of perfectness. Let us do this my dear brother and sister, reader!!!
Colossians 3 verse 15
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also
ye are called in one body, and be ye thankful
Verse 15: Let the peace of God rule in your hearts. This is every second of our daily life my dear brothers and sisters! In position we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ! In Romans 5 verse 1 we read: Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" Dear brothers and sisters we have this peace already with God through our Lord Jesus Christ! However in the daily life we are not always been led by the peace of God and that's why God calls us here that His peace will rule our hearts. We are called my brothers and sisters in one Body and that is the Body of Christ! We are members of this Body and Christ is the Head of this Body. If we let us be lead by God's Spirit through His Word than the peace of God rules in our hearts. Than we have also the fruit of the Spirit. Let us read Galatians 5 verse 22-23 : But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against there is no law. If we been lead by His Spirit than we sin not my dear brother and sister! Because this is the law of sin what is talking here about We belong to Christ and we are family of each other. Be thankful! How can we be thankful? Sometimes the circumstances we are in on earth we cannot thank for it. We have not to look for the earthly things but to God and His Word of Grace. The earthly things can disappoint us but doesn't! Remember that the sufferings of this present time are not not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us" Romans 8 verse 18
Colossians 3 verse 16
Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;
teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns
and spiritual songs, singing with Grace in your hearts to the Lord
Verse 16: This is a asking my dear brothers and sisters: Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom! The Word of Christ! This is the Word of His Grace what we read in Acts 20 verse 32: "And now, brethren, i commend you to God, and to the Word os His Grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified It is Gods wish and will and it was also the apostle's desire that the saints at Colosse let the Word of Christ dwell richly in them in all wisdom. But not only them, the saints at Colosse! We are also admonished by these words. It the Word of Christ dwellt richly in us than we are strong in Him. It is a power from God! In I Corinthians 1 vese 18 we read: For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God"
What we see here more is this my dear brothers and sisters: Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. This is very important my dear brothers and sisters: teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs! These songs however must be according Gods Gospel of Grace otherwise you cannot sing songs who are not according this. You also have to sing wisely according the Gospel of Grace. Singing songs with each other my dear brothers and sisters makes us joyful and our hearts will be glad. We do it for the Lord. The apostle Paul with Silas sang songs in prison in Philippi after they were shamefully beaten. Read with me: And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them" Acts 16 verse 25. Music has a lot of influence on people in general in the world and if you sing gospels, hymns this can have influence on people also who are unbelievers. Augustine said in the past that singing songs 3 times praying is!
Colossians 3 verse 17
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all
in the Name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to
God and th Father by Him
Verse 17: Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the Name of the Lord Jesus. Brother and sister if it is your work you have to do for living or you do volunteer's work or at home or it is the Word of God you preach or you do the dishes for example do it all in the Name of the Lord Jesus. Do it heartily for Him because He lives in us Galatians 2 verse 20! This gives me personally joy. In Colossians 3 verse 23 and 24 we see again this: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men: Knowning that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ" We are serving Christ and not ourselves my dear brother and sister!!! We live not for ourselves anymore but for Him Who loved us and still loves us and gave Himself for us on the cross on Calvary. He died for me, I live for Him! When we sigh and growl we are busy carnal my dear brother and sister!!! Think about this for a few minutes!!! Let us more thank the Lord for everything we received from Him and receive everyday. I Thessalonians 5:18: In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" In everything give thanks that is what God asking us my brother and sister. In Ephesians 5 verse 20 we read: Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ. If we do this more in daily life we have more joy in our lives with God and we get more rest in Him. We have this to make us own that it may be a rule in our lives.
Colossians 3 verse 18
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is
fit in the Lord
Verse 18: This verse and the next verse are rules in marriage according Gods Word of Grace. In Ephesians 5 verse 22 we read a similar verse: Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. In Genesis 2 verse 18 we read: And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. And in verse 22 we read: And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made He a woman, and brought her unto the man" This is the creation of the woman how God created the woman as a help meet for the man. This is the purpose that the woman in a marriage the help meet is for the man, that she has this position and that she is lucky in this position beside her husband. In I Corinthians 11 verse 8 and 9 we read: For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. Probably in the local church of Colosse there was something wrong with this because the apostle Paul writes this to them and not only to them, also to us he is writing this in a world now with a record of broken families because of divorces. What does it mean to submit yourself unto somebody else like the woman submit herself to her own husband. Submit is be under obedience. This will not say that a woman in marriage has to say nothing but more that she has respect to her husband and that she is not wise by herself and stubborn or that she dominates the man, but help her husband always is all things , also spiritual things like the Word of God rightly dividing, and and that she is modest. This is the basis for a good marriage my dear brothers and sisters. Read 2 Timothy 2:15. That the man and the woman in the marriage know Gods Word of Grace Acts 20:32 and be guided by this through God! Also a verse what is really important is Titus 2 verse 5: To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the Word of god be not blasphemed. The woman has to yield herself to her husband!
Colossians 3 verse 19
Husband , love your wives, and be not bitter against them
Verse 19: In verse 18 we have read how a woman has to submit or obey her husband in marriage. This verse is how a man in marriage should set oneself up to his wife. The man has to love his wife really with the love of God and not the love of himself what is selfish. Ephesians 5 verse 25 let us see the following verse: Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the Church, and gave Himself for it" Now the question for you personally brothers who are married: Do you love your wife as it is written here in Gods Word? Fill in this for yourselves! In Ephesians 5 verses 28 and 29 we read: So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. he that loveth his wife loveth himself For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the Church. As long as we as man to let us lead by Gods Spirit (according Gods Word of Grace) in general in our lives than the marriage will be blessed. Otherwise a marriage can be a mess and the relation between husband and wife can be severely disturbed. An example can be as a man is a dictator in the house and his wife oppressed or that she is forbidden to give her meaning or say something.
Colossians 3 verse 20
Children obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing
unto the Lord
Verse 20: As long as the children are under 18 years (here in the Netherlands) they are children and to obey their parents. The parents have rules and a child had to obey those rules what father and mother have. As long that those rules are not against God's Word, than a child has not to obey this. We see in this world so very much divorces , broken families, one parent families. This verse is for children whose parents are not divorced but live with each other through marriage in the Lord Jesus Christ. Believing parents has to raise their children in the Lord Jesus Christ. To learn them that they are the authorities in home and to lear that our Lord Jesus Christ the Head is and they can learn van their youth on the Bible which is Gods Word. In II Timothy 3 verse 15 we learn: and that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus" A child learn through the Scriptures, the Bible to obey God and God says to him or her to obey also his parents. We live my brothers and sisters in a time which is foretold through the Scriptures that men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blashemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful and unholy You see disobedient to parents. You see this a lot in this world, also in this country the Netherlands if children learn not to obey they can become criminals later when they are teenagers. There a lot of youth gangs here in the Netherlands and specially in the big cities. It is often It is often the result of not good upbringing of children. I mean not raise your children up with the Bible. Social Media can also carry (through smartphones) on this problem what we see now in the time wherein we now live.
Colossians 3 verse 21
Fathers provoke not your children to anger, lest
they be discouraged
Verse 21: What does this mean to provoke your children? To give rise to through teasing that children become angry at their father. It is not just teasing but more than that to stir up. Why does he mention here fathers and not mothers? In general fathers are teasing from nature more than mothers do. To provoke your children to anger is one step too far. The children become angry and be discouraged. As a father you should not let this get this far! For us as fathers this is a lesson. This disrupts the relation between children and father. It can go so far that children will not see their father anymore. Mothers are in general gentler than fathers that's why the apostle admonishes us as father. With the help of Gods Word of Grace and rightly dividing 2 Timothy 2:15 as fathers can you avoid this and this is training yourself on it with God's help everyday. In Proverbs 22 verse 6 we read: Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it' So we have to raise our children with Gods Word of Grace and learn our children from Gods Word of Grace and when they are older they as it is good they will not depart from it. Acts 20:24, 32, Romans 16:25-26
Colossians 3 verse 22
Servants, obey in all things your masters according
to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in
singleness of heart, fearing God
Verse 22: This verse is a about servants or slaves and especially those who are believers in Christ. In the time when the apostle Paul lived you had a lot of slaves in the Roman Empire. There were more slaves than free men. Slavery is abolished they say in this world but you have nowadays also a lot of slavery. You have for example a lot of sexslaves in this world. This is pure human trafficking. In Africa for example you have nowadays slavemarkets. Just the same like in Paul's days. There is nothing new under the sun. He, Paul is telling the slaves to obey their masters according to the flesh in everything. This was addressed to believing slaves: first to obey in all things according to the flesh , second not with eyeservice, for appearances, third as menpleasers: one whose motive is to please men or the world rather than God, four: but in singleness of heart is the ideal of having sole devotion to a task or endeavour, five: fearing God: to have respect for God. Here in the Netherlands we do not know so much this word servant. Maybe at the farmers in the past. But as we as believers in Christ work for a boss we have to have this attitude what is written here in this verse. Of course not everybody works for a boss. There are a lot of people who are their own boss and work for themselves. But let us all fear God and let God work in us and this is the lesson of this verse my dear brothers and sisters. God is our Employer.
Colossians 3 verse 23
And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as for the Lord, and
not unto men.
Verse 23: Whatsoever ye do: if it is work for living or something else you have it do heartily without murmur or protest. Everything we do my dear brothers and sisters we do it for the Lord. He is our Employer. Galatians 2:20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, Who loved me, and gave Himself for me. In Philippians 2 verse 14 we read: Do all things without murmurings and disputings. Let us serve Him and not men my dear brothers and sisters! In Galatians 1 verse 10 we read what the apostle said : For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ . In this the apostle Paul is our greatest example how to walk according to Gods Word of Grace!
Colossians 3 verse 24
Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward
of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ
Verse 24: Knowing here in this verse is for sure knowing. This is fixed. We shall receive the reward of the inheritance. What this is we don't know my dear brothers and sisters but we shall receive it, that is for sure. That's why we can with joy serve our Lord in our lives. As we do things heartily and know for Whom we do all things and not for men we shall receive the reward of the inheritance. This is very great my dear brothers and sisters so now we can serve Him with joy on this earth! God in Christ will be our Paymaster and this will be at the Bema!!!
Colossians 3 verse 25
But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath
done: and there is no respect of persons.
Verse 25: He that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong. We can also to do wrong things because of sin and this we do everyday. God's Word tells us here that the one who doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done. God will be sure to punish the unjust as well as reward the faithful servant as well if masters wrong their servants. The one here who doeth wrong is the unbeliever, the unjust. With God there is no respect of persons. Every person is equal in His eyes.
Colossians 4 verse 1
Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal;
knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven
Verse 1: This first verse from this last chapter of the epistle to the saints at Colosse is about masters. Master in that time had servants. In the time when the apostle Paul lived there were a lot a slaves or servants. The slaverymarket was in operation every day. The apostle Paul is speaking to masters who are believers in Christ and tell these masters how to deal with their servants: give unto your servants that which is just and equal. One of the masters Paul wrote to in the same time as he wrote the epistle to the saints at Colosse was Philemon. In Ephesians 6 verse 9 we read : And ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with Him" So the master get rules from the apostle Paul and that they may know that with God He is not a respecter of persons! Everyone is before Him equal. The question is how we do this in the worksituation wherein we are as employees or as head above? It is just the same: For employees Colossians 3 verse 23 and 24 applies. As head above employees Ephesians 6 verse 9 applies
Colossians 4 verse 2
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving
Verse 2: In the first time the apostle Paul wrote to the saints at Colosse and it is also written to us because we are also members of the Body of Christ, the heavenly Church. Prayer is very important for us believers my dear brothers and sisters. In Romans 12 verse 12 we read: Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation, continuing instant in prayer. And Ephesians 6 verse 18: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. Continue is not to stop. It does not mean that we pray the whole day or how much we pray each day, but we have to pray every day and saying thanks to God. Praying is talking with God and this strengthen the relation between God and us and in our prayer we have also to thank God for what we are in Christ, what we already have in Him.
Colossians 4 verse 3
Withal praying also for us, that God
would open unto us a door of utterance,
to speak the mystery of Christ, for which
I am also in bonds
Verse 3: Paul asked the people to pray for him and his co workers. This he asked from the saints at Colosse. Who were his co workers? These were Timotheus, Epaphras. Prayer is very important to do and also to pray for other persons. And here in this verse the apostle Paul asked them to pray for him and his co workers that God would open unto them a door of utterance to speak the mystery of Christ. What is this the mystery of Christ. What Christ has accomplished for us on the cross which was secret with God and God had made it known through Paul to us through his epistles. Because of this mystery he was in bonds the apostle Paul. He was in prison and that was in Rome. In 2 Timothy 2 verse 9 we read: Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the Word of God is not bound. Despite his bonds the apostle Paul continued and asked people to follow his example. We as believers and who know the truth has also God to ask and from other believers to pray for us that we just as the apostle Paul may have the utterance to speak the Gospel of the Grace of God boldly.
Colossians 4 verse 4
That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak
Verse 4: That the apostle Paul make it manifest, the Gospel of Gods Grace and rightly dividing. That he would make it known. The mystery Ephesians 3 verse 1-3. As I ought to speak: how I must speak of it. God gave Paul this commission to make known the Mystery, to Dispense His Grace to this world and the apostle Paul did this till the end of his life.
Colossians 4 verse 5
Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time
Verse 5: Walk in wisdom. Which wisdom is this? Well this is not human wisdom but it is the wisdom of God what here in this verse is meant. According to this verse do we have to walk according God's wisdom. These wisdom is in God's Gospel of Grace. And now according this wisdom God asked us to walk in this wisdom toward them that are without. Who are the ones who are without? These are the unbelievers we have to do with in this world. It is very important that we do things heartily for God and not for men so that the people who are without might begin to think about God and His saving Grace Ephesians 2:8-10! In Ephesians 5 verse 15 we read this: See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise"
Colossians 4 verse 6
Let your speech be alway with Grace, seasoned with
salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer
Verse 6: What does this mean let your speech be alway with Grace? This means that the words who came out of us should sound nice to people's ears. That we may be examples as the apostle Paul is our example. That it may seasoned with salt. This means that Gods Word may sound through us. Dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ: that we may be lead through the Spirit of God through His Word. That this may be powerful so that also the ones who are without God may hear and will accept the Lord Jesus Christ too as personal Savior. In Ephesians 6 verse 17 we read: And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
Colossians 4 verse 7
All my state shall Tychikus declare unto you,
who is a beloved brother, and a faithful
minister and fellowservant in the Lord
Verse 7: From this verse on till the end of this chapter the apostle Paul mentioned a number of people. These were brothers in the Lord who worked with Paul like this man Tychicus. Who was Tychicus? In Acts 20 verse 4 we read: And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Thessalonians Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus. All of them were brothers and co workers of the apostle Paul. Tychicus came from the provence Asia (now Turkey). Paul is sending Tychicus and he hall declare Paul's state to the saints at Colosse. All the developments he would tell the people there at Colosse. He, Tychicus was a beloved and faithful brother in the Lord of Paul. Faithful according the Gospel of the Grace of God and rightly dividing. He was also a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord. Faithful minister means that he told the people the truth Colossians 1:5-6 and that he stood/stand for the truth not only in words but also in daily life. This was the man who could teach the saints at Colosse and also comfort them. He was the right man on the right place there at Colosse.
Colossians 4 verse 8
Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that
he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts.
Verse 8: When Paul wrote this to them he already had send Tychicus to them. For this purpose that he might know their estate and comfort their hearts. There was a lot to do in Colosse. All the developments from Paul they should hear from Tychicus. In that time Tychicus had to go to them. From Rome it was a long journey to Colosse. Now you send a message via your smartphone, I phone or watch. In that time you haven't this so people did it from mouth to mouth. Some things were written down in books or upon parchments so that people could read it.
Colossians 4 verse 9
With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you.
They shall make known unto you all things which are done here
Verse 9 In this verse we read immediately about Onesimus. He was a slave or servant of Philemon from Colosse. He ran away from his master this slave in the time he was not a believer in Christ. He fled from his master and travelled to Rome. In Rome Onesimus met the apostle Paul and heard the Gospel of the Grace of God and get saved and now Paul mentioned him a beloved brother and with Thychicus Paul send this servant Onesimus to Colosse back. In the epistle to Philemon his master Paul writes more about this slave so I encourage you my dear brothers and sisters to read and study the epistle of Philemon. So Tychicus and Onesimus could tell the people all things what happened in Rome and how the Gospel of Gods Grace continued there and reached the hearts of men there too and how Paul was in prison. They were eyewitnesses of his prisonship and they knew very well in what circumstances the apostle Paul was and through his hands were done (the epistle writing).Read also Philemon 10!
Colossians 4 verse 10
Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;
Verse 10: Greetings to you from Aristarchus my fellowprisoner. Who was Aristarchus? For the first time we read over him in Acts 19 verse 29: And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. And in Acts 27 verse 2 we read again about Aristarchus: And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us. Aristarchus became in this second verse the fellowprisoner of the apostle Paul. He came from Thessalonica. He was a companion in travel and on the third mision trip of Paul he had travelled with Paul and on the ship with all the prisoners he was too a prisoner with Paul. Together in Rome they were prisoners because of the truth Colossians 1: 5-6.
The second man Paul is naming here is Marcus, the son of Barnabas sister. He was on the first mision trip of the apostle Paul! In Acts 12:25 and Acts 13:5. On a certain moment he left Paul and Barnabas in Perge and travelled back to Jerusalem and between Paul and Barnabas later became a bitterness about this Marcus to take him or not on new mision trips. But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. Acts 15 verse 38. And in the following verses we read this:
And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;
And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God. Acts 15:39-40
But now years later we read about this Marcus again and that he now a good soldier was for our Lord Jesus Christ and the saints had from Marcus received commandments so Paul send him to Colosse and they had to receive him in the Lord Jesus Christ. My brothers and sisters: a beautiful example for us these men here and let us step in their footsteps and bring the Gospel of Gods Grace to this world and also rightly dividing so that many people will be build up in Gods Grace and know how to read the Bible!!!
Colossians 4 verse 11
And Jesus, which is called Justus, who are of the circumcision. These only are my fellowworkers unto the kingdom of God, which have been a comfort unto me.
Verse 11: In this verse the next person Paul mentioned is Jesus, which is called Justus. Justus means upright. Who were of the circumcision: original Jewish people but now in Christ new men in Him. From a Jew this man Justus became a new man in Christ and a fellowworker of Paul . Probably this man was also in Rome. Marcus and Justus came from the Jewish people, the circumcised people. They became the fellowworkers of Paul and believed the Gospel of the Grace of God. Unto the Kingdom of God what does this mean? This is the heavenly Kingdom my dear brothers and sisters and not the earthly Kingdom! Those men had comforted Paul . It is also encouraging when you have fellow combatants for the Gospel of the Grace of God. For Paul it was important, very important and for us it is important too. They, these men helped Paul in prison and he send them to the local churches like Colosse or Philippi. They were a great support to him! The idea not to be alone or to stand alone for the Gospel of Gods Grace gave him Paul the courage to continue and we have the same my brothers and sisters if we have fellowworkers!
Colossians 4 verse 12
Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.
Verse 12: Epaphras was one of them , one of the saints at Colosse. He was really a servant of Christ and had Paul declared the love (agape) the saints at Colosse had for brothers and sisters. Probably he was one of their leaders and brought them the Gospel of the Grace of God. He, Epaphras was in Rome with Paul and greet them through this epistle. Epaphras was always labouring fervently in all the prayers for them. Prayer is one of the most important things we can do as believers in Christ. He was too a fellow servant from Paul and fought the good fight of faith. He was too a fellow prisoner of Paul because in the epistle to Philemon (just the same time written) we read in Philemon 23: There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus.
Colossians 4 verse 13
For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis.
Verse 13: Not only Epaphras prayed for the believers in Colosse, he had also a great zeal for them and not only for them but for the ones in Laodicea and the ones in Hierapolis. These other cities were not far away from Colosse. He shared the Gospel of Gods Grace also with them but now he was in prison like Paul. With his spirit he was with them and this let you see the love and Grace of God which worked in this man for all the brothers and sisters in all those cities.
Colossians 4 vers 14
Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you.
Verse 14: Luke! He was the beloved physician. Luke never left Paul and stayed till the end with Paul in Rome. He is the one who wrote the Gospel according to Luke and the book Acts. In 2 Timothy 4:11: Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. Luke was probably a gentile originally and according traditin he came from Antiochie. In the book of Acts Luke writes most of the times with we. This is a sign that he was with Paul and never left him. What Paul went through he also experienced. Not only Luke is mentioned here in this verse: also Demas greet them through this epistle. He too was a fellowservant with Paul and believed the Gospel of the Grace of God and stood for it and then in 2 Timothy 4:10 we read: For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. So Demas left Paul later and that was heartbreaking for Paul I think. It is always heartbreaking when a person left Gods Gospel of Grace and went his own way and go into this world. I think this made Paul sad when he was on the end of his life in prison in Rome. Love this present world. What does that mean. First you set again your affection on things on the earth and like the things what others do in this world and join this.
Colossians 4 verse 15
Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church which is in his house.
Verse 15: Salute the brethren in Laodicea. In Laodicea there were also believers in Christ and they knew also the truth, the Gospel of the Grace of God. Who was Nymphas? One of the believers who had a little church in his own house. They came together in the house of him. Some believers and maybe he was the leader of this little church and probably he lived in Laodicea.
Colossians 4 verse 16
And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea.
Verse 16: This verse is one of the closing words of the apostle Paul to the saints at Colosse. This epistle is the whole epistle which Paul wrote to them and they could read it and it was the purpose that this epistle would also be read in Laodicea of the saints there. Through all the years (2000 years) this epistle like all the other 12 epistles of the apostle Paul have been preserved and we have them still in our Bibles what we can read and study. This is very unique. There was also a letter or epistle from Laodicea which the believers in Colosse could read and studied. What the contents of this letter is we don't know.
Colossians 4 verse 17
And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.
Verse 17: Here the name Archippus. This is the last person Paul mentioned in his epistle to the saints at Colosse. Who was Archippus? He was a fellow laborer and fellowsoldier for our Lord Jesus Christ. In Philemon 2 we read: And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house. Archippus had his own ministry what we can read here. They, the saints at Collosse, had to say to Archippus that he take heed to the ministry which he had received from the Lord. Maybe Archippus losed the courage to continue in the Gospel of Gods Grace. We don't know exactly what happened but this is a admonishing for him to continue and that he would fulfil it. This is till the end. End of what? The end of his life here on earth like the apostle Paul did and what we can read in II Timothy 4 verse 7.
Colossians 4 verse 18
The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen.
Verse 18: The apostle Paul close his epistle to the saints at Colosse by his own hand. He salute them, he greet them. And that those saints there remember him and the bonds , that he was in prison so that they never forget to pray for him. Grace be with you Amen. All his epistles the apostle Paul closes with The Grace of God be with you all. 2 Thessalonians 3 verse 17: The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.
