Introduction

Who was Titus?

We can read about Titus only in the epistles of the apostle Paul. We find nothing about Titus in the book of Acts although he already traveled with Paul during the Acts period. He was also at the convention of Jerusalem in Acts 15. We read in Galatians 2 verse 1-3 the following verses: Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also. And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that Gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised

So Titus was a Greek, a person from the Gentiles. Timotheus had a Jewish mother and a Greek father. Timotheus  was circumcised because of the Jewish people. Titus not and was not compelled to be circumcised. Titus was with Paul and Barnabas with the meeting of the 12 apostles of the Jews. The difference between them is described in Acts 15 and in Galatians 2. Titus was a Greek, a Gentile and came to believe in the Lord Jesus Christus through preaching of Paul probably in Anthioch. In 2 Corinthians 8 verse 23 we read about Titus: Whether any do inquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be inguired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and th glory of Christ.  And in Titus 1 verse 4 we read :To Titus mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. Titus was a complete other man than Timotheus. In the first place he was a Greek, not a Jew like Timothy. In character they were also different from each other. Both men were trustful persons and Paul trusted a lot of responsibility to them in the work of the Lord, to comfort people, to preach the Gospel of the Grace of God.

The Epistle to Titus

The epistle to Titus is almost the same time written when Paul wrote his first epistle to Timotheus. The epistles to Timotheus and to Titus formed a trinity. They are the pastoral epistles which the apostle Paul wrote. The emphasis in the letter to Titus is about the practice, how to walk in the work of the Lord.  The epistles to Timotheus is more about the doctrine of Gods Grace.

Titus 1 verse 1

Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ,

according to the faith of God's elect, and the

acknowledging of the truth wich is after godliness

Verse 1: The apostle Paul begins this epistle to Titus that he is a servant of God. What does the word servant means? In English it is also bondman and in the Greek it is written Doulos or slave. A slave. What is the exact meaning of a slave? the apostle Paul is the example of a doulos. He did the will of God as a servant. From a murderer the apostle Paul became a slave of Jesus Christ. we read in Romans 6 verse 20 and 21: For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. This was the life of Paul before he was called by the Lord Jesus Christ from heaven in Acts 9. The apostle Paul describes in Galatians 2 verse 20 the followingI am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. In the time the apostle lived under the Roman Empire you had a lot of slaves. Slavery was on the order of the day. Nowadays slavery still exists.

Now the word apostle. What is the word apostle? A apostle is somebody who is directly send from God with a special message or Gospel. For example you have the 12 apostles who were send by our Lord Jesus Christ with the Gospel of the Kingdom to the Jews. Paul was send with the Gospel of the Grace of God Acts 20:24, Galatians 1:11-12, Romans 16:25-26 to the Gentiles. According to the faith of God's elect. You proof here the respect what the apostle Paul had for God's elect and it was inspired by God. In Ephesians 1 verse 4 we read: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:  We are chosen by God in Christ just like the apostle Paul. This is great to know my dear brothers and sisters!

And the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness. What is the knowledge of the truth the apostle Paul is speaking here? Answer: Gods Gospel of the Grace. Gods Gospel of Grace Acts 20:24 is the truth under this Dispensation of Grace whereunder we live my brothers and sisters. Read Galatians 1 vese 6-9! We read in Colossians 1 verse 5 and 6 the following: For the hope whidh is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before inthe word of the truth of the Gospel; Which is come to you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the Grace of God in truth"

This the apostle Paul proclaimed/preached to the Gentiles, Jews, Kings and even Caesar at Rome. This Gospel is the truth and this is after godliness! Oh brothers and sisters, those of you who don't know this Gospel: Read and study the epistles of the apostle Paul: Romans -Philemon and find the truth!!!

Titus 1 verse 2

In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Verse 2: In hope of eternal life. This was known with God and this He had promised before the world began with Himself that He would save the world through His Son Jesus Christ. That Christ would die on the cross for us sinners, would be buried and would ressurected after 3 days. This agreement came out 2000 years ago. What God promised will come out.We read in I Corinthians 15 verse 3 and 4:For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.  Because our Lord Jesus Christ lives can God give in Him eternal life to another person in this world. Nobody, no man didn't know about this plan of God, also not the devil. If the devil had known it he never had crucified the Lord Jesus Christ.  In Numbers 23 verse 19 we read the following words: God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall |He not make it good? This hope of eternal life God made it known to the apostle Paul for the first time. Ephesians 1 verse 9 tells us: Having made known unt ous the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He hath purposed in Himself.  The purpose to save men through His Son Jesus Christ so that men could become  eternal life in Him. Romans 6 verse 23 says us: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Our Lord Jesus Christ paid the price of us with His own life once for all. He died once for all on Calvary on the cross and was buried and stood up from the dead after 3 days because death couldn't hold Him because He is and was without sin! He is God Himself! On the moment we accepted Him as personal Saviour we too have eternal life in Him. Great to know this and we can rejoice in Him. Already we have now eternal life in Him. Thank God for this every day!!!

Titus 1 verse 3

 But hath in due times manifested His Word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

Verse 3: God hath in due times manifested His Word. On His time. Which Word here is spoken of?  Answer His Word of Grace what we find in Acts 20:32: And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the Word of His Grace, which is able to build you up. and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. In dure times God manifested this and committed this unto Paul our apostle. In Romans 16 verse 25 we read: Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began" Tt is thus the preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery. Paul was saved by Grace alone, by faith alone and in Christ alone Ephesians 2:8-9. Nearby Damascus Paul was saved and so we are the same saved like Paul my dear brothers and sisters! In I Corinthians 9 verse 16 and 17 we read:  For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!  For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me. Conclusion: It was the commandment of God our Saviour to preach the Gospel of the Grace of God which Paul got in revelations from our Lord Jesus Christ from heaven.

Titus 1 verse 4

To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy

and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour

Verse 4: To Titus my own son. Titus was Paul's son in the faith, the common faith in Christ they had together. Titus was a trustful person and Paul trusted a lot to him. Also that he had left Titus alone on the island of Crete. Titus was a young man and strong in the faith of Christ and in His Grace. He stood for the truth that's why Paul called him his own son after the common faith. In Galatians 2 verse 3 we read: But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. In 2 Corinthians 7 verse 13 and 14 we read: Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.  For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth.  And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him And so was Titus my dear brothers and sisters. So let's follow Titus' example for us!  In all his epistles the apostle Paul begins with Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior. We have a God of Grace, peace and mercy. What a wonderful God we have in Jesus Christ our Savior!!

Titus 1 verse 5

For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou

shouldest set in order the things that are wanting,

and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee

Verse 5: The apostle Paul left Titus, who was his son in the faith on the island Crete. Paul never before he went as a prisoner to Rome had visit Crete. With Titus he visit Crete and  this must have happened between his first prisonment and his second prisonment. Titus was let at Crete with a reason. What was this reason? Paul had with Titus visit Crete and seen the inhabitans of the island. Paul was well informed afterwards about the situation there.  On the saints on the island in Christ was quite lacking. In verse 10 in this same Chapter 1 we read: For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially hey of the circumcision. Now Paul left Titus alone on this island with a very big task. If you think about this task you may say this is impossible to do for one man. Titus must supplement what the believers lacked with God's Word of Grace Acts 20:32. This was first what he had to do but there is a second thing Titus had to do namely to ordain elders or bishops  in every city. Elderly men who had a lot of experience in every city. This was a heavy and difficult task to do and who was because who was fit to be a elder? Are we fit to this task as brothers? Most of the times we see a few people who can do this.

Titus 1 verse 6

If any be blameless, the husband of one wife,

having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly

Verse 6: From this verse until verse 10 it is about the bishop or elder in the local church. These are very important rules what someone must meet if he want to be a elder or bishop. He must to have a good overview. In I Timothy 3 verse 1 and 2 we read: This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach. We see here a lot of what a elder must be. It must be a man, not a woman as we see in the Christian world. Not a novice because he could be pride and fall into the condemnation of the devil I Timothy 3 verse 6. He must be blameless, nothing evil must be said about him. He must be a the husband of one wife, not many wifes. If he has children they must not be accused of riot or that they are unruly. If this is the case a bishop could lose his function.

Titus 1 verse 7

For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled

not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre

Verse 7: A bishop must be blameless. One belong nothing to comment on this person. This person as the steward of God knows exactly how to behave himself in the Body of Christ. And how does he deal with people? Thas is very important. Not selfwilled. It is not his own will but the will of God just like the apostle Paul said Lord what wilt thou have me to do? Acts 9 verse 6. Not soon angry. If a person is soon angry he can be blamed for it. Romans 12 verse 19 is a good verse for this: Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.  The Lord is a avenger over this all.  Not given to wine: not a drunkard! I Timothy 5 verse 23 tells us that it is allowed to drink a littel wine as medicin like Timothy could take: Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. Use a little bit. This is not to be drunken of it. In Ephesians 5 verse 18 we read: And be not drunk with wine, wherein excess; but be filled with the Spirit. Not given to filthy lucre. In I Corinthians 6 verse 19 and 20 we read the following verses: What/ Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. No striker: what does this mean? A fighter. Soon angry is also not good. Filty lucre: What does that mean? That somebody gives the honor alone to himself. He is proud om himself and is not modest.  So somebody who wants to be a bishop or elder must meet the demands.

Titus 1 verse 8

 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;

Verse 8: An elder or bishop should be someone of hospitality. He invites people at his home, let them sleep in his home, have sleeping places, He is gentle to others, interested in other people because he is a lover of good men but also a lover of strangers. In the Middle East people were more hospitable and this is the same now then what we see for example here in the Netherlands. In general we see a lot of selfishness here in the Netherlands due to media. With most people you cannot enter their houses spontaneous. Most of the times you have to make a appointment. A bishop must be a lover of strangers/good men. Beside this he must be sober, just, holy and temperate. What does that mean?

1 A lover of good men: What are good men? Answer: your brothers and sisters in Christ

2 Sober man: what does that mean? Answer modest

3 A just man: We are just in the eyes of God in Christ. We are righteous in Him. It must be someone who is honest. He is not telling lies.

4 A holy man: His walk everyday must be apart/holy. It must not be someone who serve sin but is willing to do the will of God everyday

5 A temperate man: Not someone who does unclean things. He had fled from those unclean things like fornication.  He cannot practice this.

Titus 1 verse 9

Holding fast the faithful Word as he hath been taught, that he may be

able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Verse 9: Holding fast the faithful Word as he hath been taught. That is according the doctrine (Dutch language). What is this faithful Word? The answer for this we find in Romans 16 verse 25 and 26: Now to Him that is of power to stablish you according to my Gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revalation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures fo the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith.  A bishop or elder belongs to this teaching to hold fast and also to preach so that the hearers will be build up and be exhorted and convinced. And also the gainsayers.  What is a gainsayer? Answer: a disagreeable person. One who contradicts or denies what is alleged; an opposer. We have nowadays a lot of gainsayers. Most of the people are against God's Word of Grace Acts 20:32. In II Timothy 4 verse 2 the apostle Paul gives Timothy this: Preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reporve, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. This is the task of a bishop, a missionary, a pastor who knows the Gospel of the Grace of God and stand for it. In the practice/daily life sometimes this is very difficult my brothers and sisters I can tell you from experience in more than 35 years. Sometimes I feel like Paul when he was alone in Athens and had to convince people there about our living God and Savior who loves the whole world that He gave Himself in Jesus Christ on the cross His life for this world. In Acts 17 verse 16 we read: Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry  Paul became sad about what was going on in this city and this what we also experience in this world 2000 years later also worser and worser.  In 2 Timothy 2 verse 24 we read: And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient. Patience is the most difficult thing because from ourselves we are not patient to others. It is if we give it over to God that He gives us the patience.

Titus 1 verse 10

For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers,

specially they of the circumcision

Verse 10: There were many unruly, vain talkers and deceivers on the island of Crete. What does it mean unruly? The Greek word here is anupotaktos and that means disobedient. A lot of people on the island of Crete were disobedient. Disobedient to what? To the will of God my dear brothers and sisters.  What is the will of God? We read in I Timothy 2 verse 3 and 4 the following Word of God according His will in general: For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. See also Colossians 1:5 and 6! (read this for yourself). Nowadays there is nothing new under the Sun. We see the great majority in this world who are unruly. It is nowadays a lot of chaos in the world because of disobedience. It is a sad situation. What we read here what happened on Crete we have it too in this world. What are vaintalkers? Answer: empty, idol, vanity. People who speak empty words what does not have a meaning. There were many on the island of Crete who were vaintalkers and nowadays in this world we have so many too. Specially they of the circumcision. Who are these people? These are the Jews and in the time of Paul a lot of Jews lived in Greece, Italy and other parts of the world. Paul is warning Titus about these Jews because they are very fanatic in their false doctrine. In I Timothy 1 verse 5-7 we read Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. What we see here the Jews were the most opposers of the doctrine of Grace. Nowadays we have most people of the whole world: believers and unbelievers who don't want to learn the Gospel of the Grace of God and rightly dividing Romans 16:25-26 and II Timothy 2:15

Titus 1 verse 11

Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

Verse 11: The vaintalkers and many who were unruly their mouths must be stopped tells Paul to Titus. These were the ones of the island of Crete. This vaintalking and false doctrine went from bad to worse because whole houses were subverted. They taught things which they ought not and it was for their own filthy lucre's sake. But how to stop such false thing which people proclaimed? Nowadays my brothers and sisters we have the same worldwide! You cannot stop it with violence. The apostle Paul gives instructions to Titus and also to us in verse 13 to rebuke them sharply and not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men that turn from the truth in verse 14. So hold fast the Gospel of the Grace of God Romans 16:25-26, Acts 20:24,32. This is the Gospel which build us up my dear brothers and sisters. Beside this Gospel there is no Gospel see Galatians 1:6-9 and somebody who is preaching another Gospel let him be accursed. There is no blessing in another Gospel and people are tossed to and fro who are believing another Gospel than the Gospel of the Grace of God. They are not growing in the spiritual life my dear brothers and sisters! So a call to all the saints in Christ: learn the sound Doctrine of Grace, the Gospel of the Grace of God: the epistles of the apostle Paul: Romans-Philemon. This is your daily spiritual food and nothing else!!! Conclusion: not by force of human strategy we have to stop the vaintalkers but by sound doctrine.

Titus 1 verse 12

One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

Verse 12: Remarkable in this verse is that one of the inhabitans of Crete, even a prophet had said that all the Cretians are liars, evil beasts and slow bellies. He knew very well the inhabitans whereunder he lived in that time. We know from Romans 3: 4a the following: God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar..... People from Crete were liars and you can imagine for a young man as Titus to be left there on the island and ordain elder in every city of the island was not a easy task: a very difficult task. A few people were to trust. From nature the inhabitans were liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. Even today men is the same: liars, evil beasts and slow bellies naturally. We read in 2 Timothy 2 verse 2 the following words: And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. There was a lot of corruption on the island of Crete and how to find trustful people? It is the same in the world of today. Men in general have not learned from the past/history. Men is just so sinful as the people in the time of Paul and Titus on Crete. In general people doesn't want to know the Gospel of the Grace of God which is the truth!  Read Colossians 1:5-6!

Titus 1 verse 13

This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them

sharply, that they may be sound in the faith

Verse 13: The witness of one of the inhabitans of Crete, a prophet and what he said about the Cretians is true and even true today. The only manner for Titus was to rebuke or admonish the saints sharply on the island of Crete so that they may be sound in the faith. It was a very heavy task for Titus to do this all. Rebuke sharply here is to admonish in a positive way. To urge them who are liars, evil beasts and slow bellies and to stop the laziness and doing nothing to the opposite to make them enthousiastic that they would help in the ministry and to move them to the Gospel of the Grace of God so that they may be sound in the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. There is a lot of tactics required for this and a lot of patience too! What the experience today: a lot of people are satisfied with what they have and don't want to grow up in Christ. They don't want to learn the truth and stay in the false doctrines of men. But still 2 Timothy 4 verse 2 tells us as ambassadors the following words: Preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine  We live in the time now that most people have itching ears, their ears are from the truth and believe rather the lie than the truth. What is the answer for this? Read on my brothers and sisters in 2 Timothy 4:5: But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry" This is what Titus had to do and we too if we know the Gospel of the Grace of God and will proclaim/ make it known to this world: do the work of an evangelist! And it is the rule not your own will but Gods will for today 1 Timothy 2:3-4!

Titus 1 verse 14

Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men,

that turn from the truth

Verse 14: Another task for Titus was not to give heed to Jewish fables. Not to pay attention to these fables. What are Jewish fables? In I Timothy 1 verse 4 a fable is a mythical story to learn a lesson from it. These were the Jewish fables! There were in that time of the apostle Paul also endless genaealogies. To be in all this was wasting time and the time could be better being used on Gods Word of Grace the truth Colossians 1:5-6! What we read more here in this verse is commandments of men that turn from the truth. People who wanted to be under the law or laws of men than rather to know Gods Grace and they tried to get other people under their commandments too. For Titus it was not to go into these commandments of men and to urge people not to go into Jewish fables and commandments of men so that they may hold the truth and stayed for the truth. The truth is to build up and this was what Titus had to preach every day there on Crete and to rightly divide the Word of Truth 2 Timothy 2:15. We too my brothers and sisters are to be awake and not to turn to commandments of men but hold fast the sound doctrine namely the Gospel of the Grace of God Acts 20:32, Romans 16:25-26. Doing this everyday we are obedient in the faith in Christ!!!

Titus 1 verse 15

Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving

is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

Verse 15: What does it mean these words all things for the pure are pure? Pure comes from the original Greek word katharos what means clean. We as believers we are cleaned by the blood of Christ! For us everything is clean. So for the believers on Crete, the members of the Body of Christ just like you and me my dear brothers and sisters everything was clean because they and we are washed by the blood of Christ. In I Corinthians 6 verse 11 we read: And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

But unto them that are difiled and unbelieving is nothing pure. Nothing is pure for them because they have not a cleaned heart as we have my dear brothers and sisters. They only serve sin, they cannot otherwise. Their life if dead. Their mind and conscience is defiled. They are on the way but their way dies. It is the way how the apostle Paul lived before he was called by our Lord Jesus Christ from heaven on the way just before Damascus. Somebody could say but i'm doing good right? I never do any men harm, I give gifts to the poor and take care about my neighbour who is ill etc. It is not this that makes you good.  You have to realize that you are born a sinner and you cannot save yourself from your sins. Jesus Christ paid the price for your sins because He died for you and me on the cross on Calvary and paid the price with His Own Life, His own blood!  I Corinthians 15:3-4, II Corinthians 5: 19-21.

For the unbeliever the motivation to do so named good things in his or her eyes is not the love of Christ what brings him or her on this idea. Human love is own sake. It is egocentric love to become better from it or to have a good feeling of yourself so I have this or that very good.  For us as believers we can serve God through His Word of Grace instead of giving ourselves a good feeling. We have not to serve sin, we can choose my dear brothers and sisters. Christ is living in us and we are clean in Him so the motivation is complete different. It is the love of Christ what urges us. The Spirit of God lives in us and we can distinguish everyday spiritual things from fleshly things.

Titus 1 verse 16

They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Verse 15: They, the unbelievers who are vaintalkers, profess that they know God. In reality it is a appearance of hypocrisy. With their own works they deny Him. Psalm 14 verse 1 tells us: The fool hath said in his heart. There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. In general they are disobedient and unto every good work reprobate or reprehensible. They cannot do good works because they don't know which are good works. We, my brothers and sisters, for us there is something else: in the Work which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them Ephesians 2:10

Titus 2 verse 1

But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

Verse 1: The apostle Paul exhorted Titus to proclaim/ to make known things which become sound doctrine. Titus the young man, the bishop on Crete, probably the first bishop on Crete had to proclaim the things which become sound doctrine!!! What is sound doctrine? What is the truth? In I Timothy 6 verse 3, 4 and 5 we read the following verses: If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil sumisings. Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: form such withdraw thyself.  Titus had to proclaim the Gospel of the Grace of God. We read in Romans 16 verse 25 and 26: Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,  But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith

This sound doctrine of the Grace of God, the mystery, is powerful like dynamite!!! Titus had to stand for it and so we are called to stand for it if we knew Gods Grace and rightly dividing the Word of truth and to proclaim this, to make known to the ones who does not know this Gospel for today!!! In Galatians 1 verse 6-9 we read something remarkable: I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.  As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.  My brothers and sisters: on another Gospel a mixed Gospel or a social Gospel rest no blessing!!! Learn the Gospel of the Grace of God Acts 20:24, 32 which the apostle Paul first proclaimed and what we can read from Romans-Philemon, all his 13 epistles!!!!

Through this Gospel of Grace we know how we are saved (read Ephesians 2:8-9). We are saved by Grace alone, by faith alone and in Christ alone!!! Not by works what we have done but by His Work, the finished Work on the cross on Calvary!!! Not only Titus was admonished by the apostle Paul, also Timothy. In 2 Timothy 4 verse 2-5 we read : Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. Brothers and sisters we live in that time above described! We live in the day of the itching ears. Men are far away from the truth. It looks like the Middle Ages this time. But you my dear brother and sister: you can know the truth if you are open for it with your heart and willing to know it!!! Do this and you learn all the blessings from God for you today and feel not like somebody who is tossed and fro anymore Ephesians 4 verse 14.  Remember the words of I Corinthians 4 verse 15 and 61 where we read the following:For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me. This is a call to all of us my dear brothers and sisters!!!

Titus 2 verse 2

That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

Verse 2: That the aged men be sober. What does that mean?  It doesn't mean that may not eat and drink but that the aged men have to be awake, that they keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties in the local church. That they have the oversight of the local church. Aged men have more experience because they've been through more. Grave what does that mean? Honorable, honest. Temperate: self in mind, selfcontrolled, sound in faith: healthy in faith. Faith in our Lord Jesus Christ according to Gods Gospel of Grace, to stand for this Gospel and rightly dividing the Word of Truth 2 Timothy 2:15, Acts 20:32, Romans 16:25 and 26. Charity is the love of God, of Christ in them and through them. Not human love because this is egocentric.  Patience: can tolerate a lot. Those men can give advise to younger men in the local church and they can give advice how to behave people in the local church  for example. They can also teach to younger people in the church. These are the rules for the aged men in the local church how to behave and what they must be

Titus 2 verse 3

The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

Verse 3: Now the women and the apostle says here likewise the aged men! The aged women are not forgotten. The apostle gives also directions to aged women and how they have to behave: as becometh holiness, in walk holy/apart. That they be a example for the younger women in the local church. Not false accusers. What does that mean? Slanderers: Slander is spreading false information. Not given to much wine: this does not mean that they cannot drink wine. They can but not that they will be drunken from alcoholic drinks. Teacher of good things: God's Word of Grace Acts 20:32, Romans 16:25-26. That they learn that the younger women. That they give Biblestudy to the younger women in the local church and in good consultation with their own husbands who are the elderly men. They have not to teach the men!!!

Titus 2 verse 4

That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

Verse 4: You see here that they may teach the young women in the local church. First to be sober and that is awake, that the younger women will love their husbands: that they may know from Gods Word their place beside their husbands. And if they have children to love their children with the love of God and in good harmony. In this broken world you see a lot of divorces. It is on the order of the day that people get divorced. If people have children then they are the victims of divorces. It has a lot of impact on children! After divorce it will never be the same: not for the man nor for the woman and nor for the children. It brings a lot of problems with it. In the local church when people know the truth the older women teach the younger women to be awake and to love their husbands and not to rule over their husbands but to be submissive. This will not say that a man in the marriage will rule as a dictator and that his will is law. Not it must be in harmony and in good consultation everything.
