The Glory of the Cross

                                                                    J.W.Weeda

The glory of the cross: what does this mean? Who spoke about the glory of the cross? Who spoke about the shame of the cross? What is the difference between the preaching of the apostle Paul and the apostle Peter according the cross?

First we want to read some verses which the apostle Paul by inspiration of God tells us : “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God”. I Corinthians 1:17,18. And I Corinthians 2:7,8 say: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

As we read I Corinthians 2:7,8 we see that according of the cross something was hold hidden. God hadn’t make known in other times. As we see in the four gospels the Lord Jesus spoke often about His suffering. We can read Luke 18:31-33 and then in verse 34 we see what the disciple’s reaction was on this: And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken. Also the prophets spoke about His suffering. It is so important  what the Bible says over the cross! There is much to find in the Bible about His suffering and dying. In Isaiah 53: 5-10 and Psalm 22:7-22 we can read about this. We know now that this is about the suffering of Christ and that He died on the cross for us.

The people in the time of Isaiah and in the time of the Psalm written didn’t know and couldn’t understand what was the writer talking about! In Marc 8:31 and 32 we have another example: And He began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And He spake that saying openly. And Peter took Him, and began to rebuke Him. Peter became angry about this the Lord spoke to them and began to rebuke Him. Peter didn’t know, it was hidden from him. Marc 8:33. Than later the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified on Golgotha. On that cross the Lord Jesus Christ said: IT IS FINISHED! We can read this in John 19:30. What was finished , the people at that time didn’t know what was finished because it was not revealed to them!

Now we can know as believers in Christ what is finished because it is revealed through God’s Word in the epistles of the apostle Paul to us and we have the whole Bible!!! Later on we will see what is finished! First we have to see what happened after the cross and exactly on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 and we see in verse 22-24: “Ye men of Israel , hear these words Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by Him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know; Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that He should be holden of it.” Peter preached about the cross. A question did Peter preached the glory of the cross? No he didn’t, why not you should ask? Because Peter didn’t know, it wasn’t revealed yet to him. He told the people in Jerusalem on Pentecost the cross as a sad fact! Here in Acts 2 and 3 we read nothing about the glory or finished work on the cross!! The people there in Jerusalem  who heard it were pricked in their hearts and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? What is the answer Peter told them? Peter said: believe on the Lord Jesus and thou shalt be saved????? NO!!!!! Peter answered and said to them: Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38. Peter didn’t know about the BLOOD! This wasn’t revealed to him on Pentecost.

Later it was for the first time revealed to the apostle Paul. We can read 1 Corinthians 2:7,8: “But we speak the wisdom  of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” In Acts 3:14 and 15 we see here again that Peter told the people about the sad fact that they crucified the Lord of Glory. And in Acts 3:19 he said that they have to repent and to be converted. He told them exactly what he knew at that moment because again the glory of the cross wasn’t revealed to him.

Now we ask ourselves what can we now know about the cross? What happened when the Lord of Glory, the Lord Jesus Christ died on that cross on Golgotha? Through the epistles of the apostle Paul you and me can know more than the people who lived in the time of the crucifixion and in early Acts. What happened exactly when the Lord Jesus Christ died on that cross on Golgotha?

1 The Law of God which was against us, which was contrary to us He took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross! Colossians 2:14.

2 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree Galatians 3:13.

3 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. Galatians 4:5

4 Through His blood which was shed for us on the cross we have forgiveness of all our sins! Sins from the past, now and future!!!! Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:14

5 He died for us on the cross while we were yet sinners, see  Romans 5:8

6 Colossians 1:21,22: And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in His sight.

7 Ephesians 2:11-13: Ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ (Gentiles)

8 For He is our peace, who hath made both one (Jew and Gentile), and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us ……………And that He might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross having slain the enmity thereby. Colossians 2:14-16 One new man in Christ!!!!!

9 We as believers and members of the body of Christ are crucified with Him!!! Galatians 2:20

10 And having spoiled principalities and powers he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it Colossians 2:15. Satan is defeated by the cross!!!

11 He died for all that the ones who live will not live for themselves but for Him, Who died for them and is raised for them 2 Corinthians 5:16.

12 Who (the Lord Jesus Christ) died for us, that, whether we wake of sleep, we should live together with Him 1 Thessalonians 5:10.

13 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness: But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power of God, and the wisdom of God. I Corinthians 1:23,24.

What is the meaning of the cross in our daily life?

First we want to see what is our position? We are crucified with Christ on the cross: “I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me,: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God” Galatians 2:20 and Romans 6:6: “Knowing  this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might  be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin” For us we must see in our daily life with the Lord Jesus Christ to reckon ourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Another verse for our daily life, walk  we see in Colossians 2:20”WHEREFORE if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinance Touch not, taste not handle not Which all are to perish with the using after the commandments and doctrines of men? We are dead for the world and the world for us. Read Galatians 6:14! Do you have this experience in your daily life? We can fully experience this if we LIVE IN THE FULLNESS what we have obtained in the Lord Jesus Christ, through HIS WORK on the cross!!!! Colossians 2:10-12

The glory of the cross is to find in the epistles of the apostle Paul!!! This is because of the mystery of the gospel what the risen Lord Jesus Christ from heaven made known to the apostle Paul! The gospel is the gospel of Grace Acts 20:24 that what was secret  with God and He made it known through the apostle Paul!!!! Read Romans 16:25, Galatians 1: 11,12 and Ephesians 3:1-9!!!!

The apostle Peter didn’t know about the glory of the cross in early Acts. Later when he met the apostle Paul it became known  to him because Paul told him about it. Read chapter 2 of Galatians!

This sermon will end with Romans 16:25: NOW to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began”

This gospel of grace is to stablish us as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and to learn this gospel and stand for it in our daily life it is for the obedience of faith!!! Romans 16:26
